Here’s the set-up: Duke Togo accepts his standard one million dollar fee from a grieving widow to assassinate The Batman. She is grieving because her husband and children were among The Joker’s countless victims and she blames Batsy for not taking care of him permanently.
Now, once Duke Togo accepts payment, there is no stopping him and no buying him off. He absolutely will fulfill his contract and is endlessly patient in setting up the kill. He is a master of martial arts and THE best sniper in the world. Golgo 13 never misses unless he chooses to do so. He has an effective intelligence network and custom equipment makers at his disposal. Finally, like The Bat, he has an “always wins” mojo courtesy of the writers.
Batman is, of course, well known to Dopers. Heck, he is practically worshipped as a god here. Peak of physical perfection. World’s greatest detective. Master of martial arts. Wonderful toys. Always prepared, and so on. Plus, of course, his writers equip him with a full measure of “always wins.”
I like both characters a lot, and it is hard to pick a victor. I want to give it to Duke Togo just because Batman has been so obnoxiously written the last decade or so. If we are talking about “Crazy Steve” Batman from All Star Batman and Robin, Duke should be given an extra million as a reward for public service.
Never heard of Golgo 13, but at first glance I thought the thread was about Batman vs. Gorgo. Now that would be a fight.
But he does stop once he kills the target, right? Batman is a comic book character. So Togo kills him, and then Batman gets better.
Killed? Batman got frakkin’ Omega-Beamed and got better!
Yeah, he does. Unless, as happens often in his stories, his client decides to pull some kind of a double cross. In that situation, he still fulfills the contract but then kills the client as well.
A complicating factor that I had not considered in the original set-up is that The Joker would not be able to bear anybody else killing Guano Lad. If he finds out about the contract before it is fulfilled, he’ll interfere. After the fact, if he doesn’t go catatonic, he’ll be after Duke and the widow in a revenge-driven fury.
If it’s in the DCU, Batman wins, but Blackgate (or whatever other prison they try to put him in) is unable to hold Golgo, and he becomes a recurring villain as he continues to try to fulfill the contract. Probably ends up clashing with Deathstroke, too, when the latter either accepts a contract on the Bat, or is taking a shot at Nightwing or Red Robin while they’re in Gotham and thus he and Golgo think the other’s trying to steal their kill.
I thought he was the only person ever to successfully dodge it, not that he got hit and got over it. Or maybe we’re talking about separate incidents when he was deliberately pissing off Darkseid.
He killed Darkseid(with a freakin’ gun!)as the Omega Beam hit him-guess which one got better.
