I thought the herd wouldn’t come back for the young buffalo. Don’t they normally run away from lions and others predators, instead of ganging up on them? Really and truely amazing.
Makes you realize that if buffalo had the same instrinct for cooperation that lions do, they’d be much harder to prey on. Perhaps in 10,000 years or so they will.
This was posted on another message board and one of the members said that he worked at a zoo and the buffalo was a very aggressive animal. Evidently they are one of the few known to group up and take on predators. Good for them, though I’m sad the lions and crocodiles missed a meal as well.
African buffalo, aka “Cape buffalo,” Syncerus caffer, are extraordinarily dangerous; they’re mean as hell and widely labelled “the most dangerous game animal in the world.” It’s not at all uncommon for them to turn and attack their predators, including, by the way, human beings. The lions generally give better than they get, but it’s not a very safe job to be a lion.
It’s one of the curious facts of life on Earth that Africa got a lot of really nasty-ass animals. Zebras are much meaner than horses, Cape buffalo are much nastier than bison, lions of course are mean as hell. Hippos look cute, sort of, but they’re as aggressive and dangerous an animal as there is in the world. You wouldn’t want to piss off a rhino. I’ve always wondered why that is.
It’s a lion hunt gone bad. There’s not blood and gore, but only because it’s not close enough. There is some pretty graphic ‘animal tackling and/or tossing’ other animals.
Heh. There is (was?) a cape buffalo at the San Diego Wild Animal Park that had a running feud with the alpha male giraffe. It wasn’t really violent–but it was amusing. I have a photo of the giraffe holding holding him off–he merely put his hoof on the buffalo’s forehead.
Buffalo stumble across lions, flee; lions chase & catch a calf. Cameo appearance by a crocodile. Buffalo re-assemble & drive off lions; calf rejoins herd.
