Sounds like the shader/video card issue that my other friend had and not an OS thing.
I don’t suppose you last did this back when you had that unsupported (due to a lack of directx 9) Ti4200 or was this after your Christmas upgrade to the supported 6800?
It was a windows 2000 problem according to the forum posts I read - dozens of people had the exact same problem and all ran windows 2000. Not everyone with windows 2000 had the problem, but everyone who had the problem had windows 2000.
And I’m 90% sure I tested with the 6800, but I suppose I could download the demo again and make sure.
My beef is that I have the PC to play the game (I bought a new one JUST for the game), yet every time I try to log onto a server, it tells me to check my Network settings.
No trouble shooting suggestions. No idea WHAT to check for in my settings. Nothing.
Just that I should check them.
The only thing I could think of was a firewall issue. The firewall has an exception for EA Games and Gamespy Arcade.
I have a Cable Modem and the PINGS are all under 200 that I attempt to join.
What gives?
Sadly, I bought BF2 and SF at the same time. With only the solo mode, it seems like a huge waste of funds.
Yeh, I get this too, occasionally. I got it almost all the time when my router had an older revision of the firmware. Updating it corrected it 95% of the time. I updated my network card drivers and that fixed 4% of the remaining 5. I can live with 1% occasional hassles. Here’s a test for you. Make sure your machine is up to date with antivirus and OS patches. Enable the windows firewall (assuming you’re running XP), or install a 3rd-party firewall. Then take the router out of the picture. Ie plug the cable from the ISP’s box straight into your network card. Does it work now?
[Nerdy]One thing I did find was that when it had these problems, I could ping IP addresses (for example, an ISP’s DNS server 203.32.8.111) but could not ping a hostname (www.microsoft.com). If I ran *nslookup * on that name, it would resolve perfectly. If I did *ipconfig /release * followed by ipconfig /renew, it would fix it almost 100% of the time. So for me, what was happening was a sudden failure to properly resolve hostnames, which in turn meant the browser couldn’t connect to a given server.[/Nerdy]
Of course, how it could connect at all, in order to get the list of servers, yet not be able to actually connect to any of them, is beyond me.
SenorBeef, it’s good to see you. I’ve been wondering how you’ve been going. And, on the topic of XP, I know you don’t want to hear this, but it is significantly better than Windows 2000. Really. Honest.
It’s not very different from win2k, so how could it be significantly better? It’s just that what differences do exist annoy the hell out of me. And I don’t want my OS to try to be cartoony fun.
I’ve used both OSes pretty extensively so I feel confident in saying that XP is TEH SUX0RS
A quick google search tells me that there’s a page in the back of the manual that lists all the ports that the game uses. You might want to try making sure all those ports were forwarded to your computer.
For a company that makes a really great game, they make really really bad interfaces.
The control options are incredibly annoying already. I want to change my reload key to X. Nope! X is a land vehicle key. Ok, go to land vehicles, search the page, find it, and I can’t even clear it, I have to change it to another key that happens not to be in use by anything else. Go back to common, try to change reload to X. Nope, something in air vehicles is bound to X. Who gives a shit? I’m not going to be reloading my rifle while simultaneously flying an airplane so this conflict is irrelevant. Besides - who cares if I bind 2 actions to the same key? It won’t cause the universe to implode.
I haven’t gotten to the game search tab, but if it’s anything like bf1942 it’ll make me want to kick someone in the face.
AH!!! How can a game with such a big budget and lots of programmers have such a retarded interface?
I can’t bind X to reload because X launches flares in planes. There’s never a time when I will be reloading a rifle and firing flares out of a plane at the same time, so WHY DO THEY NEED TO BE SEPERATE KEYS?
Even worse - I have an unusual key setup. I use the right mouse button to move forward, but Q to move back. I can’t even do that here. If the move forward function is a mouse button, the move backward function also needs to be a mouse button. Same if it’s a key. You can’t mix and match movement functions. Why the fuck not?
Sorry, I’ll stop bitching. It’s just so monumentally stupid.
Okay, one more bitch. I can’t bind X to reload because it’s already bound to something in boat keys. I go to boat keys. THERE IS NOTHING BOUND TO X.
So in order to set which key I want to be reload I would have to change a NONEXISTANT KEY BINDING THAT I CAN’T POSSIBLY CHANGE I KILL YOU DICE GAMES AHHGHHAGHEAUATAUAEU
Seriously, Battlefield 2 has the worst interface I’ve seen in a long time. I was stunned when the first saw it, especially after all the flak they took over the terrible '42 interface. It is in no way a 2005 appropriate interface.
Search your system for a control.con file, that’s the key setting file for BF2. Change them manually from there. That’s a pretty unusual setup though.
My FPS setup comes from a modified duke3d default setup. Yep. There was no point where I ever wanted to switch, really, and I just encorporated new things into it. It works for me.
Btw, thanks for the .con info. Other than the really bad interface, the game seems pretty cool so far. Except probably helicopters - I haven’t flown one yet, but seeing them in the sky, they seem along the same “even a retarded monkey should be able to fly them” flight model as bf:v. It’s unfortunate because DC had helos that actually performed like they were based on… well, helicopters. The helicopters in bf:v and maybe bf2 fly like those skynet flying hunter killers from t2.
How do I do this? My router is hooked directly to my cable modem in the closet and my PC connects to it through the wire that plugs into my network card.
What if this is not an option. The cable ISP’s box is in a closet in my kids room! :smack:
I don’t understand what “ports were forwarded to your computer” means…
I’m really more of a plug and play gamer. I am not terribly technologically savvy.
I don’t know the procedure for every router out there, but your manual will tell you how to do the things, and probably so will a google search for "configuring [router model]
Wow, this seems like the crowd to ask my Battlefield 1942 question. Whenever I get in the Priest artillery truck, I simply can’t do anything. I’m playing single player. No amount of clicking brings up any targeting info.
Does there have to be a scout sending me a targeting picture? Whenever the bots jump in the Priest, they don’t seem to have any trouble. I don’t get it.
You have to have a recon guy with binoculars. He does the “enemy target spotted” bit and from that point you artilery guys have some time (90 seconds) to use the Recon’s POV to aim your shells.
