You also need to be in the second position of the Priest, not the driving position. You can’t fire at all from the driver’s seat.
Well, there’s a really fun game in there somewhere just begging to be let out. Unfortunately it sucks more ass than it should due to 50000000 little stupidities, a lot of which are carried over from bf1942.
They have no key buffer, or something. If you type reasonably fast, the game will drop 20-40% of the letters you type because the CPU was busy doing something else at the time you hit the key. Bf1942 had the same problem. I sure do love having to retype things 2 or 3 times every time I want to communicate with people.
I had a 20 ping to this server and it was still jerking me around occasionally.
In all of a half hour of play I must’ve come across 20 small but stupid things.
Heat seeking missiles needing a lock? Uhhuh.
M16 only fires in 3 round bursts? Stupid. First, there’s no way to shoot 1 round out of the rifle at a time, which is something the real m16 can do, and secondly, a 3 round burst setting is a limiter - it doesn’t fire for you. If you just squeeze for an instant on an m16 on 3 round burst mode it will only fire 1 round. It won’t fire all 3 unless you hold it down long enough to fire 3 shots. But in the game - click, 3 shots is all you can do.
Helicopters fly like slow planes. No hint of using anything resembling real helicopter flight dynamics. I’m not expecting a hardcore helo flight sim here, but if they could at least use the basic forces that govern helicopter aerodynamics that’d be nice. They should’ve just copied the DC helicopters - they were by no means perfect, but they actually seemed to fly in a way congruent with an actual helicopter.
Minigun requires a half second or more of spinup time. I guess that’s a balance thing. Real miniguns fire pretty much immediately after you pull the trigger, there’s maybe a 5 millisecond delay, that motor spins up fast. Of course that’s not how it is in the movies, usually, which is where the BF team’s knowledge of weapons comes from.
Still loaded with complete tards, but that’s not the game’s fault. I just love when 25 people on my 40 member team is sitting around waiting for a few aircraft while the enemy rapes us on the land.
No spam control on the voice coms. This would be simple and would make things much less annoying. I don’t care that some 14 year old idiot sees a tank and has to hit “I see a tank!!!” 6 times in a row. That stuff should be put on a timer and muted.
Speaking of the voice coms - only a reasonably populated server they come so fast that they become meaningless - you can’t listen to them and actually process them because they’re just uncoordinated and spammed. This is as much the player’s fault as game design - except that half the radio commands have “do you copy?” at the end. When you’re already getting spammed to death, why add an extra second and a half that serves no purpose to every voice com?
This is only about half of the things I noticed, I just can’t think of anything else offhand. It’s too bad, because there’s plenty of fun elements and this could be a really great game, but Dice is really great at annoying you to death by a thousand cuts.
Does the patched real version make any of this better?
If you just launch the missile, they’ll automatically lock on the first target they come across. The only reason to wait for a lock on is to specify a target when you’ve several equidistance targets, such as a copter and the flares it just dropped.
If you select the weapon again (ie. push 3 again) you’ll switch between fire modes. Doing so, you’ll set the m16 to singleshot.
Ah, thanks.
Did they fix, at least, the stupid typing bug (I doubt it, bf1942 always had it, they don’t seem to care) and the jerky lag?
No. The lag is something specific to the server you were on. It happens every so often and causes a number of problems, but it’s solved easily enough by switching to a new server.
I don’t type many messages, but when I do, I’ve never really had a problem, so I’m not sure what you’re talking about. Frankly, there is a far more severe bug with respect to typing. If you hit enter too quickly, the game is accept the last character of your message as an input, which can have some seriously annoying consequences. For example, you’re piloting from the carrier to the beach and tell your gunner to “fire a tv missile” the e-key is accepted and you suddenly bail out of your copter and into the ocean. That’s why I don’t type.
It may be a problem with the demo, as it happened on every server I went on. I know it’s not my system nor internet connection, as both are fast and reliable and I don’t have the problem with other games.
It’s unfortunate because it half-ruins otherwise fun things like being a helicopter gunner.
It’s sort of like in bf1942, when you’re on a moving carrier, and you get jerked around constantly. Not as severe, and it happened more randomly, but quite annoying.
As for the typing bug, it’s actually a lot worse than bf1942. Sometimes I’ll lose entirte words I typed out, I guess because the game is a bigger system hog.
I might hit type “wow this game sure is buggy” and my chat bar will look like “senorbeef: w ths gam sure is buy” simply because the game doesn’t buffer the keys and lost half of them.
If you mean the typing bug where one in five letters you type doesn’t show, no, they didn’t.
Irritated the shit out of me on day one of 1942, and did the last time I played BF2 - which was the day of Katrina.

Ah yes…typing the ‘e’ key and finding yourself falling from the chopper you were in, leaving the rest of the playeys to try and figure out why they aren’t moving forward anymore
Usually someone has the sense to press F1 and take the drivers seat but sometime they all just crase to their deaths !
Ask a dozen players that, and you’ll get a dozen answers. My observation from hearing people whine about them on the forums:
Spec Ops: I haven’t seen any real difference between the main or first unlock. I play spec ops for the C4, and if I’m down to using the gun, I’m pretty much dead anyway.
Sniper: There’s a new sniper unlock coming out in the next patch, so if you’ve got the bug telling you you’ve already got your two unlocks to pick, you might want to wait until we get the specs on it.
Assault: The grenade launcher on the F2000 is pretty accurate. Expect to be vilified and even banned from some servers if you use it. The actual bullet-throwing part of the gun, for me, is pretty much worthless. The first unlock actually does more damage, but has a pathetically small clip.
Support: I’m of mixed opinions. The first one is a good all-around gun for the Americans (the Chinese support gun, not so good…). The first unlock can push off a combat chopper that’s ignoring me (i.e., if I’m hidden and I unload a belt into it, it’ll start smoking and go away). The second unlock has a higher rate of fire and seems to be more accurate, but does almost no damage.
Engineer: If you’ve got the first engineer unlock and play engineer a lot, you might want to get the second one; it’s basically a submachine gun, and can take down an opponent much better than the jackhammer.
Medic: I don’t know about the second unlock, but lots of people seem to have it. I can snipe with the Medic gun about as well as with the sniper rifle. I also get three or four times on my final score when I’m playing Medic on a city map, so if you’re looking for raw global score, play Medic a lot.
Anti-tank: This is my second-favorite (first is the medic gun, but you’ve got that). I can take out two people before having to reload, and if I need to take out three, with any weapon, I’m probably dead anyway (the same thing can be said about the first assault unlock).
Server browser = poorly designed piece of crap. It boggles my mind that with the wealth of brainpower that must have been available, they couldn’t make a more responsive server browser.
If it’s a headshot, it should be one shot one kill. If it’s a .50 (unlock) to the torso, it should be one shot one kill. But not the leg. This is one thing that chaps my ass, that if I get shot twice in the torso I survive, but 5 times in the foot is death? NFW.
I hate that trees don’t stop bullets and that APC rounds have an outrageously huge splash. It’s like they can shoot around corners.
Actually I have no problem with this… war is war. I mean, they make your main base non-capturable, isn’t that enough? In real life, when the bad guys capture all your bases, you’re just done. There’s no non-capturable bases. And the arty takes a minute to reload, that’s enough time to get to a safe spot.
I understand the behavior, some of it is inevitable. What I don’t understand is why it isn’t punished better. There should be a penalty multiplier for TK in an area with no enemy or enemy-held flags.
Yeah, me too sigh
They’ll lock, and get close, and miss. The SAM’s are just crap. When I can’t hit a helicopter in range with a SAM, that’s a problem.
And while I’m on the rant, what the heck. There should be mobility kills for tanks. If I hit a tank in the tread with a rocket or whatnot, the tank should lose its mobility but still be able to fire. That would be a little more realistic balance.
There is some kind of “punishment” but I’m not sure what it actually is. I think some servers eject you for too many TKs.
I haven’t had too much of a problem though. Although I did shoot one teammate in the face for being a dick. And one guy was going around forcing TKs by jumping on top of helicopters.
I don’t have a problem with spawn camping or boobytrapping flags with C4 or Claymores. It was very satisfying planting C4 charges around a flag, blowing it when I saw the flag change and then see multiple “You killed ______” messages. Sweeet.
I have no complaints about the Barett .50 sniper rifle. I’ve actually managed 3 helicopter kills with it.
And I do love riding in the back of the Blackhawk (provided the pilot doesn’t suck).
The parachute thing is corney though. If you are jumping less than a hundred feet or so, they should make it a fast rope or something.
Actually, this happened to me the other day. I’ve just got to the stage where my flying is reasonable (thanks to a joystick) and thought, “what the hell, I’ll take my buddies into combat”. The throttle on the joystick wasn’t quite calibrated though, so I just used the “w” key. We all know what’s next to the “w” key, don’t we?
I’m flying along, and then suddenly, I’m falling… falling… falling. ARGHHHHHHH!!! Parachute! Parachute! Parachute!!! ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!
I think my buddies all died too. sigh
The best way to set your throttle on your joystick for a helo is to have is exactly neutral. Use the W and S key to throttle up and down, but the throttle on the stick to bring you back to hover.
You will be able to hover your helo over a flag without much issue. A full blackhawk can carry 4 to a flag, drop 2 or three and hover over the flag with one or two gunners still aboard. The gunners will rack up kills, which will negate their loss of flag capture points.
My biggest complaint about the game is the whole TK/Punish situation. If I lay mines, my team can clearly see them, always. If they hit the mine, for gods sake don’t punish me for your stupidity. In my opinion, the TK/Punish only punishes those who actually care about their score and would never intentionally TK someone.
The flake that runs around killing his own team will rack up an impresive negative score, but it takes a majority of the ENTIRE player roster on BOTH sides to get a guy kicked out. Why would I want to kick out a TK’er on the other team? He is doing me a favor after all??
You know what would be cool as shit? A game (if not a BF2 expansion) with movable, destroyable full scale carriers, destroyers, cruisers, etc where you could jump in various stations - gun turrets, the helm, fire control, etc and fight like that.
Because one day he could be on your team.
Max.
I know what you are saying, my point is that it is impossible to kick someone out. The only people who should have a say in someone being on the team is that team, not the other one.
I don’t play on any servers that still use voting, on account of it’s annoying as all get out, and it never, ever works. The moongamers servers have an auto-punish for teamkilling, which is an automatic -4 team points, so they don’t give people the option to punish or not (on servers which have the option, it’s -2 no matter what, -8 if you choose to punish the person). Amazingly enough, the -4 points is enough to keep the majority of players from getting any teamkills. That, and, you know, learning how to play the game rather than running around like a Quake-crazed n00b shooting anything that moves.
That was (is) Desert Combat, and Desert Combat Extended for BF1942.
For all of it’s issues, that mod, to an older game, was far superior to BF2 in every way.
Though, I do currently have issues with 1942, as I didn’t reinstall it properly after the last rebuild of the PC, and I’ve been playing BF2 recently.
TKs are always -4 regardless of the person punishing or not. In the earlier patches, it was -4 for a TK and another -4 for a punish, but they removed the punish penalty because everyone complained about being wrongly punished. At the moment, being punished is almost meaningless.
