okay, we’re in the biggest (and arguably, most tactically important) frakkin’ battle since the genocide, the crew of the Pegasus all know that Gina is a Toaster, and on top of that, her brownness knob is not turned all the way, if you get my meaning, and on top of that, she’s armed (and i don’t mean with English muffins or Crumpets or what have you…)
so we have a known Toaster walking the corridors of the Pegasus, with a loaded sidearm, you mean to tell me that not one of the Pegasus crew would have the common sense to “unplug” her before she takes out someone in CIC?
yes, i know, they wouldn’t have been able to use that nice little cop-out ending of Gina getting a little revenge, but from a purely tactical standpoint, the crew of the Pegasus were a little lacking here…
still, i liked this episode, lots of stuff done blowed up reeeeeaaal good…
3 stars, not even 3.5. Great, great tension built up with the attack and the dual impending assassinations, but a tremendous cop-out with the last 10 minutes.
Very interesting development with Baltar. He managed to smuggle Gina off Pegasus? He’s got a real Six now? For a bit there when he said he knew a place she could hide, I thought maybe Gina could supplant the Six chip in his head, when she “died.” Now I don’t know, but it’s still kinda cool. I like the idea of a real Six being around to talk to. Seems like the two Six models have different agendas.
The part with Apollo reminded me of the Battle of midway, and Ensign George Gay, USNR, who was shot down (along with the rest of his torpedo squadron) and watched the battle, and the sinking of the Japanese carriers, floating in the middle of the ocean.
Why the Hades did Cain decide not to kill Adama? The only thing that makes sense (even though it’s unsupported speculation) is that she somehow picked up on Adama’s plan to have Starbuck kill her, and when Adama cancelled she reciprocated.
Also I agree it should have been impossible for Gina to make it all the way into an Admiral’s private quarters (!!!) unobserved. And it’ll be a copout if they provide no explanation of how Baltar got Gina off the Pegasus. It isn’t like he can wheel a laundry cart onto a shuttle.
And what the hell is going on with Lee? Why long long minutes of him floating glassy eyed staring at the universe like a stoner? And why the death wish? Frankly Lee Adama is starting to be nothing more than a whiner. What was up with Dualla listening in?
Resurrection ship’s gone, so that isn’t going to save Roslyn. But can’t the Cylons just build another stat? With hyperspace jumping it isn’t like a replacement couldn’t get out to the front lines almost immediately. And yes they should have tried to identify all known humanoid Cylon models. Major intelligence failure there.
I do love that they didn’t go with the obvious thing and have the Pegasus destroyed. Or have Adama do an “aw shucks” and turn down the promotion to admiral.
I don’t know what’s going on with Virtual Six. My earlier speculation that she isn’t really a Cylon at all has been tempered by her reactions to Gina’s abuse and the slaughter of the Cylon fleet. But I don’t think that getting into human’s heads is part of any standard Cylon ploy. Something strange is going on, and it’s just too simplistic to dismiss as “Baltar’s a looney”.
I really, really hope “they have a plan”, and that the show’s creators aren’t just improvising.
Was Baltar under orders from the Prez to let 6 whack Cain as a super-double secret backup?
Personally, I loved Apollo adrift. It’s a classic science fiction conceit. I always say (yes, always! I’m saying it right now, in fact) that setting a story in space and not having anyone die in the vacuum (or at least the threat of it) is like setting a story on a ship and not having anyone drown. Anybody remember a similar scene from Space 1999, sans battle?
I’m not sure what else you do when you are floating helplessly in space but stare glassy-eyed. I had thoughts of 2001: A Space Odessey and was singing “Ground Control to Major Tom…” in my head. I think Lee was trying to come to terms with his predicament and conserve energy just in case. Until he found the hole in his suit of course. Then he made peace with the gods and accepted his fate.
To me, Apollo has become more and more interesting. Lee has been at war with himself for several episodes. Adama at one point told him to “pick a side”, so he aligned himself with Roslin and Tom Zarek. But then he realized he couldn’t go fully against his father so tried to throw himself back into being an officer. But remember when Tighe said to him “You’re not fit to wear the uniform” after Adama was shot? Lee thought for a second and said back to him “You’re right. I’m not fit to wear the uniform.” (and finished up with “But neither are you.” --zing!!)
In my view, he’s always been comparing himself to others…to his father, to his brother, to Starbuck…and he finds he does not measure up. He is going through the motions of being a military man; his heart is not in it and he is constantly trying to convince himself otherwise. Just my opinion of course…
I also must say again how much I love this show and can’t stand when it’s over!!! I don’t want to wait another week!!!
Oh yeah, and Dualla and Lee kind of shared some wistful stares in a few previous episodes, she’s got a crush so of course she’s trying to get the scoop on Lee…
one would hope that the Toasters understand the value of backups, it’s hard to believe that they’d only have one of such an important ship, i would also hope that they change the appearance of the new Resurrection Ship, as the Colonials now know what a R.S. looks like…
something similar happened to John Crichton in Farscape…
the major villan, Scorpius, implanted a neural chip in John’s head, in order to extract the wormhole technology knowledge that was implanted there by the Ancients (no, not the same ones in SG-1), Chip-Scorpy was just as evil as Meatbag Scorpy, and Chip-Scorpy actually posessed John a couple times, culminating in Scorpy-John actually killing Aeryn Sun in a dogfight (Prowler Vs. Farscape One)
Scorpy retrieved the chip from John’s head, but the chip left behind a neural imprint of Scorpy in John’s mind, at first, the neural clone (who John names “Harvey” after the invisible rabbit) is a direct clone of Scorpy, just as evil, just unable to force John to do anything, and after living in John’s mind for a few cycles, Harvey began to “soften up”, get a sense of humor, and actually end up helping John survive , John may not admit it, but i almost think he considered Harvey a kind of “freind” by the end of the series, he seemed sad to see Harvey go at the end of Peacekeeper Wars
so, in order to bring myself back on subject, it’s possible that the Six in Baltar’s head may have inadvertently, subtly, changed (and is still changing) from her original Cylon programming, and is becoming more sympathetic to, if not the humans, at least to Baltar
I think that’s possible, but in last week’s episode there was a brief scene where Cain was reading (or re-reading) Galactica’s logs. If I remember right, she looked absolutely miserable. If she was comparing her own actions after the attack to Adama’s (stripping the civvie ships, leaving them to die), there couldn’t have been any doubt in her mind that Adama is the better officer. I’d like to think she canceled the assassination for some shot at redemption, or out of some desire to rejoin what’s left of the human race. Maybe the commentary will shed some light.
I agree. I think sometimes Ron Moore’s desire for moral conflict gets the better of his characters. I mean, even Gandhi would be thinking about assassinating Cain at this point, the woman’s a complete monster. But Apollo is shocked and disappointed in his dad? The entire scene in Adama’s quarters had me sneering at the screen. I think they should toughen him up a bit.
Or maybe he just needs a girlfriend. As of this episode, his old man is officially getting more play than he is.
I think Adama and Caine didnt wuss out. I think they had a case of the "not today"s. They had just worked together to win a major battle. Everything went as planned. This was cause of celebration. I think both Captains didn’t want to mar that by human on human violence. I think within days ad after butting heads AGAIN it would have been back to bloody thoughts.
Now I didn’t se ANY of season 2. Is the possibility that Roslyn is a cylon legit? Or is it “wouldn’t it be cool” speculation?
On a somewhat related note, has anyone else though that it might be hard to see out of your helmet when you have a light right in front of your face? I would think that would cause glare problems and make it pretty hard to see into the blackness of space.
I think Lee preferred death to the alternatives of betraying Starbuck or betraying his principals by assassinating a superior officer. He cannot go back and not aide and abet Starbuck and he cannot in good conscience aide and abet her.
While dying in space is in its own way a betrayal of Kara (and the fleet he is sworn to protect), it is a self-punishing sin of omission rather than of commission.
