Battlestar Galactica 2.9 — "Flight of the Phoenix" (open spoilers)

I was wondering why they didn’t capture a slew of the cylon raiders instead of just blasting them. In addition to giving the fleet raiders of their own to use, it would have made for a ton of raw materials: peel the skins to wrap new fighters & melt down the rest to re-form as needed.

Anyway, good ep.

Not to mention, they wouldn’t have expended so many resourses in the form of ammunition.

I got a little tired of being hit over the head with “we’re all cracking up due to stress” thing at the beginning, but beyond that, I liked the episode.

Can someone explain how, in light of the fact that Boomer can jam a fiber-optic cable into her palm and up the inside of her forearm in order to interface with the computers, it was so diffcult to create a cylon detector? Wouldn’t such an interface require such a significant change in physiology that an X-ray could detect it?

Is it just me, or was Tyrol’s voice deeper in this episode?

Also, I wish they would stop with this virus thing; it’s getting somewhat silly. What could Sharon actually see in two pages of decimal (I guess they don’t use hex) code?

I thought this was a much better espisode than last week’s. Since I don’t watch a lot of Sci-Fi, I don’t know most of the cliches. That means a lot of this stuff is new to me.

I’m a sucker for the character/soapy story lines, so this show did a lot for me. The Helo/Chief fight seemed inevitable. Helo’s character strikes me as being extremely heroic and decent. He didn’t leave BoomerMommy alone back on Caprica, he did sacrifice his seat to Baltar in the MiniSeries, he won’t fight the chief, etc. I’ll put him on my list of Favorite Characters[sup]tm[/sup]. I’m still trying to figure out BoomerMommy’s connection to ShotAdamaBoomer - do they have the exact same personality? Is BoomerMommy an individual copy of the model, but with different emotions and memories? It seemed so last week - CylonBoomer said “I’m still alive!” and seemed surprised.

Based on the way everyone treats poor BoomerMommy, I think that the writers want her to be a babyface instead of a heel. If she were a Cylon spy, the writers would probably have everyone accept her and treat her like an ally. But she’s not wired in! Or is she? I’ll be very disappointed if her situation turns formulaic - the character is too intriguing for me.

Thanks for explaining the deal about Boomer uploading the Cylon Virus to the raiders - a friend called me at 10:48 last night, so I missed the scene.

Tearing up moment of the week - when Roslyn was speechifying about holding on to hope in the face of impossible odds. That’s what attracted me to this series originally - the human race is almost wiped out, but still a few remain!!! Watch, as they nearly fall apart, but then pull together when needed most!! Chief’s success on the new-style Blackbird was very touching to me, as well. Starbuck’s goofing around seemed like a forced bit of drama to me.

Which intern wrote the festering turd of a scene suggesting the possibility of a Dualla/Apollo romance? Come on - she goes for the skinny dorks, not the buff flyboys. Not that I’ll take Apollo off of my Favorite Characters[sup]tm[/sup] list or anything, but we can’t have him sleeping around as much as Starbuck.

Damn.

I’m looking forward to the “Season Finale,” but I’m dreading a cliched power struggle between Adama and the new Commanding Officer. She’ll probably be a Cylon, anyway. I’m also looking forward to some resolution of the Chief/Helo/BoomerMommy triangle.

He was definitely doing alot of mumbling. Kept having to ask each other…“what did he say??” Oh well, gives me another excuse to watch the rerun on Monday eve!

One observation:

I got the impression that the writers were making a statement by the way the crew put Boomer in the ultra secure leg/hand/neck irons. Maybe it’s hard for me to articulate, but I found myself thinking…“I wonder if someday the BSG crew were to look back on this incident and think–‘I can’t believe we treated Cylons this way’” I guess what I mean by this is that the Cylons were created by the humans (Roslin even mentioned this when Adama asked for her advice)…granted it didn’t turn out as planned, but in human history we look back on different instances and think the same types of things…like “wow, I can’t believe we treated other races this way”…etc etc.

Just something that came to mind watching that scene.

Overall good ep but I’m really looking forward to the next 2 shows!!!

I thought the GSP ™ would give them away, but yeah, now you just have to X-Ray for BNC connectors.

I don’t think she is. The Cylons at the end of the last episode needed to see the smuggled “cut scene” to know Boomer was still alive and had her baby.

I just keep wondering if she picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue

I liked the build a viper bit. Where did the get the carbon fiber? I must have missed something.

Yeah, the virus bit has been done before on this show, but there were enough little things I liked that I enjoyed the episode overall. Some of those little things:

  • Tigh taking the bottle of moonshine after letting Tyrol know where he could get supplies. Tigh’s character is so up and down: one moment he’s doing something good and then his weakness shows up.

  • Adama’s look at Boomer at the end when he says “take this thing back to the brig” (or something to that effect). We don’t know whether she can be trusted or not and that one look conveyed that Adama doesn’t yet–but he’ll use her when he has no other option.

  • Someone saying the virus got in when “Tigh linked the computers” and Gaeta just standing there, letting Tigh take the rap. You sneaky weasel Geata! I think I’ve had a cow orker or two like you!

*The scene of Boomer being brought to the bridge in the leg/hand/neck irons. I mean, I would expect those precautions if the cylon was Vin Diesel–but Boomer is so small! It made me chuckle at first. Then it really set up just how afraid she makes everyone.

Hey, Six beat the snot out of Starbuck, and she’s the best (insert form of martial art here) in the fleet!

Speaking of Starbuck, it was quite lucky that Lee and Hotdog had The Best Shot in the Fleet with them to shoot out a giant window–even if she did need help aiming when the O2 dropped!

Dont be surprised if we see a few in future ep’s, I would be pretty surprised if they dont scavenge like mad for parts and fixable ships, after all its not like they have enough pilots to go around as it is, adding a dozen cylon ships would simply give them some new tactics to use. (as well as some of those sweet ass ftl drives)

Thanks for the info, FilmGeek

I can usualy ignore bad science, but when it becomes part of the plot point, it really irks me.

Stealth ship?!

In deep space, where there’s very little to no light, everything’s a stealth ship (at least visually).

But i guess this falls into the whole. Well, if we can have sound in space, i’m sure we can create vast amounts of light while we’re at it.

He did seem to be using the MK I eyeball rather than any instrumentation to find her, didn’t he?

In the sense that the carbon plating makes it practically invisible to DRADIS, it could be called a stealth ship. It fits in with the rest of the anachronistic nomenclature used aboard the ship - i.e. the Viper squadrons being called a Combat Air Patrol even though they’re in space.

Judging by the clips, better brace yourself.

I thought this ep took care of that, by letting Tyrol and Helo blow off some steam with their fight scene and subsequent apology. They both seemed to have let go of it when Helo told him “You’re lucky, that half-machine thing she’s growing could have been yours!”
Anyway, I’m trying very hard to remember that this show is *not * about technology or plot details, it’s about characters and settings. I’m trying to get past Boomer being physiologically human, yet still having a fiber optic router for the ToasterNet in her wrist. I’m trying to get past her being able to diagnose the virus by glancing at a printout through the barred wall. I’m trying to get past there being no sheet metal available anywhere in the fleet, but plenty of carbon-fiber panels just lying around. I’m trying to overlook the Colonial Fleet still using DOS (even the C:>FORMAT command) but still susceptible to subtle, almost undetectable viruses, and for that matter that the Jolly Roger virus works on Cylons as well as it works on the bug aliens in ID4. I’m even trying to ignore the massive Cylon attack on the ship that’s carrying the precious God-child.

No, this was about Adama learning to trust his people (including his President and his captive Cylon) more, and their repaying his trust. It was about the crew growing out of their mediocrity. It was about their relieving tension and increasing optimism and initiative. It was even about Grace Park’s bondage scenes (more, please!). It was about coaxing fankids of all ages into not obsessing over continuity the way we did with Star Trek.

Okay, how about this:
Cylon bodies produce some photo optic response to light inside the body, as humans can make white blood cells on demand, and produce those tetra thingies, tumors of teeth and hair.

The giveaway line was:

REM Frack the humans.

I’m not arguing with that. But Apollo visually lost sight of the blackbird. That really irked me.

Does it help to point out that he’s a weeny?

When testing an experimental spacecraft, could you reasonably expect to keep in visual range if you had navigation lights?
