Battlestar Galactica 2.9 — "Flight of the Phoenix" (open spoilers)

You know what would’ve made the blackbird really awesome? Some bitchin’ flame decals. Or at least a couple of spinnas on the landing gear.

Cubert Farnsworth: “Help me put on these decals I found in my cereal box. They’ll make the ship go faster”
Leela: “And what do you base that on?”
Cubert: “I’m 12”

Yes, I was gonna say, that since they can produce light in their spinces she just had to shove that cable up her Assuming Gaeta should just go through all the code of all of the systems and get rid of the virus is something only a non-programmer could suggest. It was nice seeing him blow up though.

I liked seeing Dualla but I’m concerned about the relationship appearing from nowhere. Not only has there been no interaction of that sort with Apollo, she’s been involved with Billy, and Apollo is too senior to mess around with a petty officer. I don’t want the writers being forced to make soap opera relationships just to please some executives.

I appreciated Tigh’s understanding of Tyrol’s “it’s all I have left.” That’s good writing and shows how a few words can advance two character personailites. And adding Tigh’s taking of a bottle of moonshine is perfect. And then I’m reminded of that tiny tough of Tigh licking his lips after the cristening ceremony. Perfect.

I also liked Adama’s struggle to trust Boomer. He found a common ground - “we both want to live” - but how hard is it to trust that a machine, who is multiple copies, truly wants to live and wouldn’t sacrifice herself?

I thought Helo being redeemed by coming up with the composite material was forced. They should have had idea all along. I don’t think you can just think up the idea, slap on some materia, and have it working as DRADIS-invisible without some R&D.

Technically, I might be able to see gleaning intent from some code. I couldn’t see it clearly, but it looked like hex instead of binary and so had a high density. In any event, I thought that it could have reprogrammed her (or at least tried to). And perhaps that was it’s primary purpose. Imagine that the virus was supposed to kill and also get a message to Boomer that said, “Hi. Don’t worry, we’re comin’ for ya!” That would get the same reaction out of her. Why would the vrius that attacked awhile back say “We’re comin’ to get ya”? Maybe Xena put in the new virus after she stumbled upon Boomer in the infirmary.

What we’ve seen here is huans, under extraordinary circumstances, behave nobly, and crack under stress. We seen relationships develop due to need and break under mistrust. We’ve seen loyalty and disloyalty. We had some choices based upon convictions - belief in the the mystical search for Earth, belief in your oath to the military/government, belief in your cause. Now I would like to see character development where they make more choices based on their core beliefs.

I’m sure they’ll have some people who want to go with the Pegasus, fight the Cylons, and return home. Are those too weak for the journey, or too strong to give up their homes without a fight. There should be some who see the Pegasus as meaning there’s more of mankind that survived - “We don’t have to give up our way of life. I want a home and a democratic government and a hot shower.” And maybe there’ll be more who wonder if Boomer isn’t like all the other bad Cylons and deserves a chance - Not every German was a Nazi. Helo is in that camp, sure, but he seemed too lovestruck and oblivious to the potential threat (He was listening to Boomer back on Kobol about talking things into her own hands and it sounded like she was talking about killing Adama). But hearing some comments perhaps he’s just very loyal and once he chooses a path he sticks with it. So what of some others, and what paths might they choose and stick with? We’ve seen Apollo and Kara make choices and follow new paths.

{Am I rambling? I try to hurry and write these in between work and home life and now I wonder if I’m just hurrying more than expressing anything coherent.}

Remember Dualla helped Apollo when he was going against Adama and helping Prez Roslin. They shared a few “knowing” glances during those episodes.

I think it’s an interesting pairing. It’s time for Apollo and Starbuck to realize they are more like brother and sister than, well, you know. And Du is too cool and smart to stay with a wimp like Billy.

Just a note regarding the thing I mentioned at the beginning: The official site is confirming on the front page that this Friday’s 2005 finale “Pegasus” will run two minutes longer than the standard hour. So double-check your TiVos and VCRs and stuff.

I’ll enjoy seeing what Pegasus looks like. Remember that Galactica was fifty years old, built at the time of the first Cylon War, and about to be turned into a museum when the Cylons struck the 12 Colonies; presumably Pegasus is a more current model.

I wouldn’t discount Billy as just a wimp. We don’t really know much about him; there’s room for all sorts of development.

Incidentally, it’s well known that Colonel Tigh can smell booze at 800 meters.

“If you’re going to put the pistol in your pants, you should put the safety on.”

And save the ship when it’s been boarded by Cylons.

That’s one of the reasons I’ve been looking forward to Pegasus. I’ve been curious what a state of the art battlestar looks like. I hope we get to see it.

I’m confused; in the four-hour pilot episode, I thought they said that the Galactica was the last battlestar still on active duty, that all the others were in mothballs. The presumption being that after forty years, no one was really expecting the Cylons to show up, and that they were going to retire the battlestars altogether and rely on planetary defenses. But the posts I’ve read here talk about the Galactica being retired as the most ancient battlestar, with presumably newer ones still active. Which is it?

IIRC it was the last battlestar that had seen battle in the previous war. There were a dozen or so newer ones, equipped with Baltar’s networks and the Cylons’ virus, that were all destroyed in the surprise attack that started the war in this series. Galactica remained non-networked at Adama’s insistence - IIRC he commented at the ceremony that “A lot of good people died here because she’d been networked, and I won’t allow it to happen again”. Since it was being retired anyway, and Adama was a major hero, the peacetime fleet HQ didn’t push the matter.

I wouldn’t read much into Dee’s knowing glances at Apollo. Maybe Kandyce McClure just has the hots for Jamie Bamber.

Hell, I’m straight as an arrow and I’ve got the hots for Jamie Bamber…that is one good-looking man. I would give my left nut to have arms like that.

…but then you couldn’t…never mind.

Since he is also apparently attempting to get other parts and get off the show, there may also be the possibility that they do not want to continue that romantic interest story with him, only to potentially have him become an even more minor character or disappear. He’s been in the episodes a lot less lately, even though he supposedly did not get the part (and therefore, I thought, should have been back at his normal level of involvement).

When Starbuck mentioned that the new viper they were building was built for speed, did anybody else think that they were going to install an intelligent computer in it named C.O.R.A.?
