So how does the Colonial economy work, anyhow? Down to 41, 399 people, and all of humanity’s resources exist within the fleet. Are workers paid, and if so, with what? We know a black market exists…but what about regular markets? How does a civilian earn his meals? Is anybody rich?
Realistcally the Fleet would be a very authoritarian command economy. The closest thing to being rich would be having a high ranking position (Roslin, Adama, etc) or very rare needed skills (doctors, pilots, etc).
Also being a skilled trader, black market or not. It seems basic things are rationed in a somewhat communist way, but if you want something special you have to trade for it and if you don’t have anything to trade you’re screwed. It’s hard for me to imagine the average Caprican can actually maintain any sort of comfortable lifestyle when their bank accounts got nuked and they really don’t have much to trade, other than their senior accountant at the Caprican Wal-Mart skills.
When the pilots sit around playing cards, don’t they play for money? I wonder how paper money could have any value now? Could the fleet have some sort of Chairman of the Colonial Reserve who could somehow stabilize the currency?
My interpretation was that when he took them off, that’s when you’d know he definitely was lying. With regards to Caprica Six, Baltar said, “Give her my love,” almost as an afterthought. Lampkin stole Baltar’s pen and then made up this big story about how it was a romantic gesture from Baltar in order to weaken Caprica’s resolve to work for the prosecution. In reality, Baltar was flipping out when he couldn’t find his pen.
Similarly, Lampkin’s playing Lee because it will look good for his client if he has the son of the Admiral (who is also on the tribunal) on his side. Lee was showing his inner romantic, so Lampkin said that the love story he told was true. I get the feeling things didn’t work out so well in reality.
I don’t think we’ve seen them play for money for a while now. I thought they were betting things like civilian clothes and other non-essential items, or even leave days. Also, I’d have to think that the organized fleet-wide black market came to some kind of end when everyone settled on New Caprica.
I want to know who makes all of the booze. We’ve had food & water shortages, but never any booze shortages. Nobody seems to pay for drinks at Joe’s, but the booze has to come from somewhere, right? Is it all “New Caprican” reserve?
There’s a few ships in the fleet that are replicas from the original series. I think the refinery ship is another.
Tyrol showed the deck crew how to make a still way back in Season 1. It was one of the (few) things that the Pegasus crew were impressed with about the fleet.
Also from Season 1 – the Colonial Movers ship, from the original series and used as the decoy / Viper launch platform in “Hand of God.”
“And this is Bob Tootle with your talk wireless traffic report. We’ve got a big backup on the approach to Galactica, due to an earlier incident with a supply shuttle that’s got the two left landing lanes blocked. Alternate routes are advised…”
Those are basically the same spoilers Silenus linked to in the Baltar’s Trial thread. I think the story is they were originally posted somewhere called TV without Pity, and got copied elsewhere before being deleted by the OP who claimed to have felt guilty about “ruining the finale”. Certain parts seem to be corroborated by a vague article in the Chicago Tribune, by a writer known to have actually seen the remaining unaired episodes. However, the parts that appear to be corroborated are some of the relatively minor points…not the REALLY BIG THING. Also I note that the person that posted the spoilers in your link provides more detail in certain spots than the original version…including the outcome of the trial and something that has been subtly foreshadowed but will be very suprising to many.
I’m not sure what to make of the spoilers. If they hold up, it would make for an shocking end for the season, but it would also contradict certain things we thought we knew. I’d enjoy analysis/discussion of the spoilers in detail, but that would have to be another thread, with fair warning given…
