Battlestar Galactica 4.21 "Daybreak" Part One

Another subtext to Adama’s turning Cottle back is “there won’t be any wounded on this mission.” Sort of a “with it or on it” moment.

And one conjecture is that it’s Hera’s musical notes that contain the coordinates of this new planet where civilization will start again. Also it’s clear from the Opera House prophesy that Baltar is involved in the rescue of Hera. That will be his final act of redemption. That was set up in that scene with Lee last week. We’ll see if any of these conjectures will hold up in the finale this Friday.

They were on the B ark!

Hmm, posthistoric penguins, hmm.

I’m thinking that Baltar will redeem himself in some irreversible way so that he becomes a true messiah for his flock.

(And I coulda SWORN I heard him drop the f-bomb…but I’m kinda deaf)

And they’ve got Roman names mixed up with Greek ones for the Olympian gods. And for some reason Aurora is in there. And there’s that Valkyrie battlestar. And the fact that the Cylons use the Prayer to the Cloud of Unknowing. And then there’s “All Along the Watchtower”.

Seriously, that ship sailed long, long ago.

That didn’t happen at Earth. That happened when Kara Thrace suddenly showed up in “Crossroads”, just as the Cylons show up looking for a fight and just as the Final Five are activated.

Specifically, it was in the Ionian Nebula, the remnant of the long-ago supernova that was depicted in the temple of the Five on the alge planet, before it’s sun went supernova.

I didn’t catch that so I don’t know; but I do know that Antarctica wouldn’t be that shape without the ice, it is actually two separate land masses. Wiki has some good graphics on that.

Yeah, but does Ron Moore know that?

Not a spoiler anymore, but in the new behind-the-scenes special Moore commented that the final episode was centered on the characters, not plot.

Characters are what the show’s about, sure, but based on that, expect some major ends to remain loose.

With apologies to Gilbert and Sullivan:

I’m not certain what the penalty is for ending a television series in a way that displeases Carnivorousplant, but it involves either Robert Johnson Whiskey, or molten DVDs…Yes, I’m certain molten DVDs come in there somewhere.

I’ve been informed – but cannot verify at this moment – that in the podcast for “Islanded in a Stream of Stars”, Ron Moore confirms that #7 Daniel is in no way related to Kara Thrace. thank the gods.

I finally got to see Friday’s episode.

Here’s my initial reaction –

I liked the Baltar flashback.

I’m worried about the finale –

Counting cliches –

  1. Shootout and rescue
  2. Impenetrable fortress penetrated (and destroyed)
  3. Time bomb (black hole)

All we need now is a car chase/shootout

I really hope I’m wrong about this. I don’t want to see the final episode wasted on a run-of-the-mill action flick.

I was resigned to the probability that the Galactica would be destroyed at some point. I wasn’t expecting that all of the name characters except for Baltar would be going on a suicide mission. And how exactly are they going to take Roslin with them?

Oh, yeah, and –

  1. See a photo/change of heart

I assumed that the unpleasant task being assigned to Adama had something to do with the decommissioning ceremony.

She snapped the baby’s neck as an act of mercy, to spare it from the impending holocaust. It’s wasn’t some sociopathic experiment.

Beautiful!

Adama said the fleet can’t afford to lose a doctor. That doesn’t mean he’s the sole doctor.

What feels very wrong is Adama leading a suicide mission. It is irresponsible to leave the fleet vulnerable by taking every military resource on this mission. Did Anders have an earth-shattering revelation? [sub]Like his dick will fall off unless he does this?[/sub]

In the preview for the finale I saw the following:Are you sure you want to read this?1. A character (maybe Boomer/Sharon/et.al ?) holding a gun on a aged Anders. Is the finale spanning years/decades? Does this mean Galactica survives?
2. A UN-style conference or religious meeting. A robed figure presides. Two stands on either side of the podium with old-style cylon heads on them. Baltar looking small and meek in the crowd. Adama and Baltar are survivors? Any others? Is that person at the podium a Being-Of-Light?
What are your interpretations?

I don’t think it was either. Why kill the baby to be “merciful”, when doing so caused the mother so much anguish (even if it was brief), when they’d both be incinerated when the nukes hit Caprica City? She was genuinely curious about babies (having presumably never seen one before, just inactive adults bathed in organic cosmoline), and didn’t realize how weak its neck was. That’s why she had that “Oh shit, I just clogged the toilet and it’s overflowing” look on her face after she killed it.

Good point, Muldoon.

So did anyone else watch the “Last Frakkin’ Special” they aired? Don’t know if it’s worth its own thread - it was mostly just actors talking about how they loved the show, and producers and directors talking about its history a bit. And either James Callis stayed in character whenever they talked to him, or he actually is Gaius Baltar. I especially liked when they asked him what was his favorite thing about working on BSG, and he replied “I got to make out with Tricia. A lot. Really, really, a lot.”

Moore did confirm that the choice of the Final Five was almost random, like it appeared.
