Bayou Riverboat Steamwheel Chicken?

Years ago, my dad and stepmother used to make a dish I seem to recall being called the Title of this particular thread. It was a dish of rice (dark and flavored from being cooked with… something) that was sticky and delish, with a set of drumsticks set out like the arms of a steamboat paddle wheel. Hence the title.

A while back I asked them for the recipe, as it was one of my fav dishes as a hearty eating teenager. They had lost the original, but tried to remember it as best they could.

This was a miserable failure.

I remember that they would cook Chicken with Italian Dressing, and also cook the rice in the left over fluids from that cooking. They also added soemthing (soy?) that made the entire thing much darker in color than one would expect.

Beyond that, I’m drawing a blank, as are they.

Does anyone have any idea what the hell I’m talking about? It was sticky and incredibly good and filling as all get out. I’ve tried once or twice, but I’m not that experienced of a cook yet.

Google has failed me.

Help me Dopie Won, you’re my only hope!

The rice sounds like a variant of “dirty rice.” Dirty Rice

Of course, this may not be the recipe used in your case, but I think if you do a little searching around Cajun and Creole recipe sites, you’ll probably find something close.
