Be a Dick: break the NRA boycott

Dick’s Sporting Goods, one of the leading retailers in the US, is immediately ending sales of all assault-style rifles in its stores. Dick’s will also no longer sell high-capacity magazines nor sell any gun to anyone under 21 years of age, regardless of local laws.

Story quoted here: "Edward Stack, the 63-year-old chief executive of Dick’s whose father founded the store in 1948, is deliberately steering his company directly into the storm, making clear that the company’s new policy was a direct response to the Florida shooting.

“When we saw what happened in Parkland, we were so disturbed and upset,” Mr. Stack said in an interview Tuesday evening. “We love these kids and their rallying cry, ‘enough is enough.’ It got to us.”

He added, “We’re going to take a stand and step up and tell people our view and, hopefully, bring people along into the conversation.”

This is a call to arms. It’s given that the NRA officially or un-officially will call for a member boycott of Dick’s. There’s roughly 5 million NRA members. ON the other hand, there are a lot more consumers than that in the US. I personally will make a show of solidarity and take my family shopping at Dick’s for the first time ever this weekend. My shopping can off set the loss in revenue by not selling these weapons, and off set boycott impacts. YMMV.

I’ve been planning on buying a tetherball set for our backyard. I was going to do it in the spring, but now is as good a time as ever. I mean, is it a coincidence that someone in west Michigan buys a tetherball set in February from Dick’s the same week they announce they’ll stop selling assault-style rifles and high capacity magazines? Nope.

I support Dick’s stance here. Unfortunately, I’ve been personally boycotting them for a couple years for completely unrelated reasons.

I’m going to Dick’s right now to buy every gun they have for sale. Take that, NRA!

From NY Times:

I guess they’re going to stop selling assault weapons after every major school shooting?

Also from the NY Times: this time, Dick’s CEO Mr. Stack said that the changes will be permanent.

Calls to arms are prohibited by the Registration Agreement. As such, I’m closing this thread.
