Be a Dick

I thought Dick’s said that they were going to do this after Sandy Hook?

They did and then they started up the Field and Stream stores that went ahead and sold them. Perhaps Field and Stream is a department in Dick’s now, I’m not certain because I never go to Dick’s anyway.

In NJ, age discrimination laws don’t cover public housing and public accommodations. I’m assuming car rental is considered a public accommodation, as one does need to be older than 18 to rent a car in NJ from every car rental company that I’m aware of. They make exceptions in NY and MI as they must rent to those at least 18 (though they can discriminate the fee based on age) because of state laws. I’m sure they would make the same exception for NJ if the laws said they must. I don’t know of any car rental companies that have an age 25 minimum anymore. That was years ago.

Actually, this is a gun control measure I could get behind - minimum possession age of 21. Under that age one could possess a shotgun or hunting rifle with a magazine capacity of 5 (or some low number) only if they are actively hunting, licensed to do so and hunting with an adult 21 or older, who is also licensed, or under the supervision of the adult gun owner at an approved firing range. Of course, possession on private property with permission of the property owner would be excepted.

Possession of any weapon by someone under age 21 under any other circumstances would result in a misdemeanor charge AND confiscation of the weapons(s).

Dick’s Sporting Goods should definitely pass that legislation! Would the Walmart Parliament follow suit?

Given the pun in the title, all I can think of is how when my son started playing little league baseball and needed a protective cup for his crotch I was howling at the idea that we should get it at Dick’s Sporting Goods.

As long as Dick’s takes a hard stance on this position, and doesn’t go soft, I think they will come out ahead.

Yeah, I can’t imagine going to WalMart or Dicks to buy a gun. Then again, I’d never buy tires at a Sam’s Club either.

(@kopek: I remember as a little kid, going into FIREARMS UNLIMITED in East Liberty(?) with my dad. I don’t remember what he bought, but I vividly recall looking around at all those guns and wondering how much they were all worth. In my mind there were thousands of guns, including some pretty crazy military looking stuff.)

I’m amazed at how many Dopers seem blissfully unaware that this is a regular pattern for Dick’s: loud, public proclamations that they’re not going to sell evil black rifles, followed up by some quiet reversion sometime down the road.

I’ll balance you out by never having stepped into a Dick’s in my life and now I’m going to make a special trip to go buy something there.

If it was only Dick’s it wouldn’t be much. But it isn’t. This is a big movement right now. Some big movements fizzle out, some don’t. I’m hoping this is the latter.

How would we judge if this big movement fizzles out or not? If it accomplishes X it’s a success and if it doesn’t, it fizzled (X=???)? If we’re still talking about it in a month? What would you use to judge the movement’s success or failure?

BTW, Walmart already did this once before too: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/27/business/walmart-to-end-sales-of-assault-rifles-in-us-stores.html

Hurray for Dicks! We’ve thrown about $100 their way this week. It helps that it’s the start of kids baseball season.

That’s OK. You shop at Dick’s and I’ll go watch Death Wish and we’ll call it even, K?

Regular pattern? Got cites? It was pointed out upthread that Post Sandy Hook, Dick’s did make proclamations, removed product and later sold said product in their Field and Stream stores. I wouldn’t call that a pattern.

If Dick’s does back track down the road, then they will lose my business. Anyhoo, the kids and I are ready to do some shopping solidarity tomorrow.

A pattern? All I’ve seen is that they said the same thing after Sandy Hook but a year later opened a new chain that did sell “assault style” weapons. Now they are shutting down sales in that chain too. Can you flesh out the “pattern” for us blissfully unaware folks?

I was spending zero dollars at Dick’s before their shrewd bandwagon jumping publicity stunt. Now I am so outraged that I’ll…er…keep spending zero dollars there…HARDER. So there.

And I did. I bought some mosquito repellent and a Moon Pie. I hadn’t had a Moon Pie for a LOOOONG time, and whose idea was it to describe them in the nutrition information as THREE servings?

In the early 00s, when I worked at the grocery store pharmacy, the Kmart in that town closed and we got one of their pharmacists. After one of our regular customers left one day, she said, “He was part of a group that would come into Kmart all the time and protest because they sold guns.” Our lead technician said, “I can understand why; his son committed suicide.”

Twenty years before that, Target also sold guns and ammunition.

That’s kind of like my boycott of Chick-Fil-A a few years ago. Since I didn’t like their product anyway it was very easy. Same thing with Hobby Lobby; it was really tough giving up cutsey-kitsch.
