Bear loves to jump up onto the highest shelf of my etagere (sp?) but this evening he was feeling lazier than usual and jumped up to the shelf just below the top. They are about twelve inches apart and the same size.
Well, he washed himself and observed his world for a while until he realized that he had settled for second best among shelves. He peered up around the shelf edge and realized that he wanted to relocate. No problem, he thought, and started to stretch himself around, and tried to grasp the upper shelf. Ugh! No go. time to complain to his chief of staff.
I patiently explained to him that what he was trying to do was physically impossible, and that he would have to jump down and try it all over again. Nahh, he could do it, given a little time to think about it. So I went back to the computer, about ten feet away.
About a minute later I heard frantic scratching and scrabbling as Bear had tried to clamber his way up to the top shelf and was hanging by his claws, with no resolution in sight that he would accept. Before I could reach him he had resigned himself to his fate, and dropped to the floor, landing with a substantial BOOM. (He’s a big cat.) He of course pretended that nothing untoward had happened, and a few minutes later leaped up to the top shelf, where he soon dozed off.
My late wife used to say we had no need for a home entertainment center. We have cats!
