Beck - "Guero" Released Today

We’ve had it playing now everyday since the release. Even the longer version CD is 79 minutes of just plain fun easy listening.

I used to be very (natural) blonde about 10 years ago. I worked in a dialysis clinic
with many Hispanic patients. The big joke was that they all liked the “guera” to put in the needles for their treatment. So I’ve been “guera” for a long time, now.
I always say that Beck is the son I never had, maybe he’s actually my astral twin brother.

Hope to see him at Coachella this weekend, but haven’t heard anything about a last minute booking.

I missed this thread the first time around.

Guero sounds more like Odelay than anything Beck has done since, and given that Odelay is probably my favorite album of the 1990s, that isn’t a bad thing. Most of the complaints that I’ve read are along the lines of Freejooky’s “Beck by the numbers” comment, accusing Beck of being derivative of his own earlier work. This is only because Beck set the bar so high by making five excellent, popular, and critically-acclaimed albums that don’t sound all that much alike. How much is one guy expected to innovate?

I think the album is very “typically Beck”, but it’s everything I like about him–catchy songs, quirky arrangements, slacker delivery, and a sense of being retro and futuristic at the same time.

Still, dude’s jingling a wish coin that he stole from a fountain. The lyrics are lots of fun to read.

I enjoyed him on SNL and I loved Odelay, so I put this one on my wish list.

After losing the Cocteau Twins and Doves, Beck would be a nice addition (just not in the Gobi tent).
