The full significance of the title doesn’t become apparent until the very end of the novel, but “Lot 49” isn’t a piece of land or an allusion to the Biblical figure but rather a lot of goods at an auction. A lot is “cried” when the auctioneer announces it and begin taking bids.

I don’t see how any of those are related to the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. Or the 1890s in general. Or H.H. Holmes and his hotel of death.

Reading on, I summised by context the term to refer to a concept of an electric or motorised boat - given the era was much around the onset of electricity - in preference to a choppy sort of rowing boat. Conceptually something smoother and more elegant. Loved that there were several new terms in the book I have now learned.
The becoming boats are on the left side of the channel, and the begoing boats are on the right side.

Speaking of tours, the boat tours (hosted by Chicago Architecture Center docents) are wonderful.
My wife and I just did that exact tour in April. What a fantastic way to see Chicago architecture. Really something special.
