Bedridden- recommend some intersting high-content sites

So I had my wisdom teeth out on Friday. Unfortunately, I’m still in a good deal of pain and unable to eat enough to really keep my energy levels up. I’ve spent the last couple days going between the bed and the computer and back.

I’m getting pretty bored. I’ve nearly finished my library books.

I’m hoping for some recommendations for some sites where it’s easy to kill an hour or two. Something with a lot of content- like Crime Library or Etiquette Hell. I’m interested in just about anything, as long as there is lots of it.

Any ideas?

There’s good TV recaps, if you’re into that sort of thing, at Television Without Pity.

Paging through movie reviews is always a fun way to kill some time. Try Roger Ebert’s website, or James Berardinelli’s ReelViews.

RinkWorks has a crapload of stuff, notably Computer Stupidities and Book-A-Minute/Movie-a-Minute. (Books and movies condensed into one minute or less.)

Uh. I think I’m tapped for now.

Pointless Waste of Time does it for me. I crack up every time.

My personal fav there is “8 THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT RETURN OF THE KING” (No link, 'cuz it’s not work safe).

aldaily.com : Arts & Letters Daily. It collects really interesting articles from all over the web. They don’t acquire many new ones each day, but they keep them for a long time–so there is quite a collection.

Thanks!

Though I must say I managed to disagree with every single article on the Arts and Letter site. It’s kind of the anti 3quarksdaily.

Owwww…so sorry to hear you’re going through this. Do you know James Lileks’ stuff?

Here..

Nothing to add website-wise, but just suggesting that if you’re not feeling markedly better by Monday, you might want to talk to the dentist. You may have a dry socket. It sucks, but is easily treatable. Good luck and feel better.

This site has the Complete Sherlock Holmes tales, including the original illustrations.

Yeah, I think that I do. It’s only one that hurts and it hurts pretty bad. Grrr.

If you feel inclined to go this route the New York Times has an extensive movie review section as well, going quite a ways back. I believe you have to register but it is free.

I highly recommend The Onion

bored.com has links to a lot of fun sites.

popcap.com and yahoo games are good timekillers if your computer and connection are reasonably fast.

youtube.com is fun… some TV shows have entire seasons up, there are lots of music videos available, and there are some comedy routines and interviews with celebrities and little jokey video things.

songmeanings.net is sometimes good in small doses

killsometime.com is my sister’s favorite. I’ve never been there, but she’s certainly on it a lot.

deviantart.com is fun for some people

thespark.com message boards are great… they’re sort of online study groups, but I’m a dork and like talking about literature outside of school and learning the stuff other teachers in other schools teach. There are science and math etc boards too, I think, but I like the literature-related ones best.

This may be due to the fact that I’m a freak, but I can spend hours on calorieking.com

You can watch episodes of the PBS news show Frontline for free online:

Great stuff.

I’ve heard about this fantabulous site called THE STRAIGHT DOPE, but you might not wanna go there if you are feeling crook.

There’s all these, like, TMI threads about people getting wisdom teeth extracted that are just, like, gross y’know?

Get better soon even sven.

I had one, but my dentist didn’t tell me how to recognize one (or that they were even a possibility!) so I went for a couple WEEKS thinking I was just being a big baby. Damn! It’s hurty.

If you’re ever looking to study stuff, How Stuff Works is great.

If you like interesting photograhy, opacity.com is a great site. The guy to whom the site belongs goes to various abandoned buildings and takes some amazing pictures. He also gives a short backstory on each site. Neat stuff.

Cute Overload, if you like cute animal pictures (who doesn’t??). Go through the archives.

MetaCafe for stupid video clips.

You could listen to radio shows. My favorite is NPR’s Wait, wait, don’t tell me. They have all their past shows for streaming.

But I find the biggest time-waster is when I decide to buy something (upgrades for my computer, digital camera, bike, etc.) and do “product research” online. Look for reviews and owner feedback on various models and try to figure out which is the best deal.
