Beer (IPA) reccomendations

I’ve fallen in love with Dale’s Pale Ale. My gf is cool with the situation, but the relationship is a bit expensive. A case of Dale’s in my part of western PA is running $38.00.

Any suggestions on a similar (but cheaper) beer?

You may want to check out Saranac IPA (Matt Brewing) or Harpoon IPA if you can get it in your area. I think both are pretty good. The Saranac is a bit floral.

My personal favorite is Stone IPA. Nicely balanced, which is not exactly Stone’s usual MO.

I’ve found that Ranger is pretty good, especially for the price (good beer gets expensive).

Odell has a really nice IPA. I don’t know where you live and if you can get it there, but Schlafly (local St. Louis brewery) has a really nice seasonal IPA; they actually have two throughout the year, an Import IPA and an American IPA. I find that the American is the better balanced; the Import is slightly too heavy on the hops.

Oh, that is a damn fine beer. I spent most of last summer toasting sunsets on Tybee Island with a sixer of Dale’s.

Founders Red’s RyePA is another big favorite of mine. Sierra Nevada’s season Celebration Ale is my number one favorite and is definitive for the style. SN Torpedo is also good and can be had year round.

WooHoo! I’m writing down these suggestions and making a drive to a decent beer distributor near me tonight.

Anderson Valley Hop Ottin’ IPA

Anchor Liberty Ale

IPA is my beverage of choice. My favorite is Mammoth Brewing’s IPA 395. I like Menage A Singe by Tied House and Sierra Nevada’s Torpedo IPA too. Dogfish Head’s 90-minute and 60-minute IPAs are also quite tasty.

Sierra Nevada Pale is really edging into IPA territory. Stone anything will rock your socks off with the hops. Personally I think Sierra Nevada’s Torpedo IPA is lousy.

iron city? It is in Pennsylvania.

I hated it.

Heh. Actually, the Iron City Brewery makes Augustiner which is drinkable. What is sad is being in a bar in the Caribbean and seeing Iron City as an import.

Racer 5 from Bear Republic is awesome. Better if you can find it on tap, though.

It’s may not be available in your neck of the country but Bridgeport IPA out of Portland (Oregon) has been one of my favorites for a long time.

The BridgePort India Pale Ale, perhaps the brewery’s best known beer, has won a number of awards in the United States and abroad, including a Gold Medal at the 2005 Brewing Industry International Awards, in Munich, Germany; a Gold Medal and Category Champion Trophy at the 2000 Brewing Industry International Awards in London, England; and a Gold Medal for Classic English Style Pale Ale at the Great American Beer Festival, in Denver, Colorado, in 1997.

Bridgeport is one of my favorites as well. Sierra Nevada’s Torpedo Ale is quite good as well, and might be more widely available.

I wonder if there’s a big difference is availability between western PA, where the OP is, and Northern CA, where I am. I can walk into any local supermarket and find a dozen craft brews, and BevMo has literally hundreds. Am I as a beer drinker just unbelievably lucky to live in this part of the country, or can you find all of the beers mentioned in this thread pretty much everywhere these days?

If I recall correctly, liquor laws in Pennsylvania are weird.

Another good one came to mind–Doublewide IPA from Boulevard Brewing in Kansas City. I like their tag line for the brew–“Relax, it’s twister proof!”

Three of mine are mentioned, Red’s Rye PA, Bridgeport, and Stone IPA. Red’s Rye PA is still the best beer I’ve ever had.

Oh, recommendations: Stone Ruination, Surly Furious, Southern Tier’s 2X IPA, Great Lakes Commodore Perry IPA, Mojo IPA.

Also, the same brewery that makes Dale’s Pale Ale makes a fantastic Scotch Ale. Find a six of that and you’ll be very happy.

And to add on a new one…if you can get one…Three Floyd’s Dreadnaught IPA. Fantastic.

I love Elissa IPA, brewed by St Arnold’s here in Houston.

Austin’s 512 Brewing Company has a fine IPA; haven’t had their Double IPA, which looks as if it would knock your socks off…

My favorites:

Ithaca Flower Power
Bell’s Two Hearted
Southern Tier IPA and 2XIPA
Smuttynose IPA
Bear Republic Racer 5
Stone IPA
