beers that taste like corona

Dos Equis in Mexican beers. Otherwise something like St. Pauli Girl Dark or Beck’s Darek.

Yeah - I could urinate in a bottle, top it up with tap water and run it through a Soda Stream. That’d be close, at least.

And Corona is overpriced, too. The original importers of Corona methodically devised a way to create the impression among ignorant North Americans that Corona was some kind of luxury import, (I read an article about it a long time ago), in order to sell it at a higher price.

Really, if you’re going to drink beer from Mexico, Bohemia is your answer. (In Mexico, Corona and Sol are the cheap way to placate tourists.)

I like Pacifico.

IF its fresh, and very very cold.

I don’t think the OP will like ‘Mexican beers’ - they might turn him into a mayan priest that doesn’t know how to wash his hands.

Club soda:mad:

The main reason he’s interested in Mexican beer is because he’s worried about hydration. Confusing he’s complaining about Corona being salty, because he obviously needs the electrolytes.

He won’t have to wash his hands, because apparently he wants to spend much of his time wearing heavy gloves.

He’ll have to be careful with the booze, though, because even though he’s convinced he can’t be arrested for DWI blowingunder .08, he’s wrong.

He’s having quite a week.

Edit: Also, Bohemia.

The most important thing about drinking beer is being a big snob about it.

If you can’t insult somebody else for enjoying their chosen brand you might as well drink something shitty, like Coors Light.

Funny. I actually had Coors Light a couple nights ago after drinking some craft brews at a bar, and it was surprisingly tasty. It seems like every time I have Coors or Coors Light, I am pleasantly surprised. I’m going to have to have it side-by-side with some other macros to see how it stacks up.

If you drink enough of the good stuff first - it will be fine.

Personally, I think most of the popular light lagers taste a lot like Corona. Just add a lime and they all taste pretty comparable to me.

Hey, you can search all of a members posts? :eek:Wow. Amazing. (ironic slow golf clap).

I’d like to hear of one, too.

I want to be able to suggest an alternative myself, as I love beer, and Negra Modelo is a long time favorite (in fact, I’m drinking one now). Sadly, I’ve never found one that is its mix of being a fairly light bodied lager, but having its particular sweetness and dark malt. Shiner and other lighter-bodied bocks almost get you there, but they’re sweeter, and the chocolate of the dark malt isn’t as bitter.

As to the OP, I would second Modelo Especial. Around here, it’s much cheaper than Corona. It’s neither overly bitter or sour, and it comes in cans, so skunking isn’t a problem (unless you like that sort of thing, I’m not here to judge). Unless I’m feeling the need for a light beer using ale yeast, it’s the macro brew I go for (until Steinlager in cans becomes available!).

Negra Modelo is a Vienna Lager (and a surprisingly good example of it as well). The most widely available alternative will be Sam Adams Boston Lager, but it does have a fairly different flavor profile compared to Negra Modelo. If you can find it, I have found Devil’s Backbone Vienna Lager to be quite tasty and maybe a bit closer to what you are seeking.

That’s very interesting. I have always alternated between Dos Equis Amber and Negra Modelo at the Mexican restaurant I frequent, without noticing a huge difference.

Thank you for the info. My favorite beer brewed locally is Lakewood Brewing Company’s Vienna Lager. I can see the similarities, I wouldn’t be surprised to find they’re using similar yeast and hops, but Negra Modelo seems to use darker malts. It’s got far more of a coffe/chocolate taste than the Lakewood Vienna has. Sam Adams Boston Lager seems to use a similar malt recipe to Negra Modelo, and the yeast seems like it leaves a similar amount of sugar behind. But yes, it has a lot of hops for any style of lager, and I don’t think they’re primarily German style bittering hops, which changes the flavor dramatically.

The only Devi’s Backbone I’m familiar with is a delicious Belgian ale brewed by Real Ale. It’s another of my favorites, but if we’re talking about the same beer, I don’t see any similarity to Negra Modelo. Are we talking about the same beer? If not, tell me about it. I’d be happy to try another beer named after a Texas road :).

Sadly, neither the Lakewood or the Devi’s Backbone I know could be a substitute for Negra Modelo. They’re both harder to find and more expensive. I was considering advising a browse of Trader Joe’s earlier when looking for a substitute for it, but I couldn’t put my finger on which of theirs I’d advise. I think their contract brewers tend to err on the sweet side of the malt bill, with a slightly heavier body than N.M.. Considering your advice, I’d say their Vienna Lager almost does it. It’s still a bit sweeter and heavier than Negra Modelo, but it’s dark malt is more noticeable than other Vienna Lagers I’ve had, and it’s also usually cheaper. If you don’t have a Trader Joe’s nearby, I don’t have any good advice. All of the other good Vienna Lagers I know are either imported from farther away, or are regional.

Devi’s Backbone is actually a brewery here in Virginia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devils_Backbone_Brewing_Company). Their beers are pretty ubiquitous out here, but I was uncertain about how far they could be found outside of Virgina. They have a great variety of beers and the majority of them are quite good, if you can get your hands on any of them.

The best mass-market, macrobrewed Mexican beer is Nochebuena…only sold in the Christmas season. Its as far from Corona as one can get.

The most “Mexican” tasting American lagers, to me, are Landshark, Rolling Rock, and Michelob lager. There is this new Coors product, Batch 19, that is supposedly a recreation of the the pre-prohibition recipe. It approaches Modelo especial or Bohemia, but not quite as good.

Michelobe lager?

Have you had it lately? They went to an all malt formula (no corn/wheat/rice etc.). It’s not bad and it doesn’t taste Mexican to me (not that Mexican is bad, like I posted earlier I like Mexican beer). But taste is subjective and it’s kind of dopey to even debate it, I guess.
