Beetle Bailey & Corporate Intrigue?

So I’m reading todays funny pages…and there is Beetle Bailey…and my first pre-caffeine reaction was “huh?”. Is Mr. Lay a new employee at Camp Swampy?

And then of course I get it. It just seems weird for Mort to be making a political joke. Has he ever done any other political bits? It’s kinda like seeing Nancy & Sluggo discussing the Florida Election controversy.

I would probably get this if I knew who Mr. Lay is. Is he one of the folks involved with Enron?

Yep…Kenneth Lay, former CEO of Enron…and a fairly scarce dude these days.

So Mort Walker isn’t living in his own little time warp after all. How long did it take him to update the black Lt.'s (Flap?) hairstyle? I think he was still wearing that afro into the early 90s.

Grrr! The LA Crimes doesn’t carry Beetle Bailey, and the only place I can find the strip online is in the King Features site, which is 14 days behind publication for some odd reason. Can someone give me the dialogue, pretty please?

FIRST PANEL: Beetle realizes that Sarge is hot on his trail. He says to himself, “I’ve got to go where nobody can find me.” (paraphrased)

SECOND PANEL: Beetle is walking through a shadowy forest. He’s looking into a thick brush and says, “Oh, excuse me, Mr. Lay.”

[rim shot]

Actually it’s: First panel: I’m going to go where Sarge will never find me.

Second panel: Oh, Hello Mr. Lay."

Thank you!
