BEHOLD! The AWESOME power of my CABLE modem!

In case anyone has noticed (which I doubt, since I only post about once a day), it’s been a few weeks since I have had access to the internet. This is because I recently moved and was too stupid to set up the cable/internet installation appointment ahead of time. But now, after two and a half weeks of no cable/no internet and years of stinky dial-up, I AM FREE.

I fully plan to bask all night, day, week, etc… in the tingly, sparkly, yummy, glow of MEDIA.

But I need help. What super-cool places can I go? What super cool things can I do? All of you with high-speed internet, assist me in my quest!!

I cannot put into words how much I hate you right now.

  • Gassendi, posting laboriously via dial-up

I don’t really know any sites to exploit your new-found speed. I’ll just say this. I moved to cable about three years ago. Then the company changed to DSL. Once you’re on High-Speed internet… you’ll NEVER go back to dial-up!

You can watch Edward the Less, all 13 episodes. it’s several years old but still pretty funny. It’s by the MST3K guys. Heh, still advertising Silent Hill 2. Warning it ends on a cliffhanger.
Ahhh, I remember when I got a cable modem. All the super cool things I did can’t be linked to unfortunately.

BEHOLD! The AWESOME power of the SDMB Hamsters! Slowing down your CABLE modem!

Hey, it did it to my DSL!

How about some games with Flash at Fetchfido. There are some good Internet radio stations you should check out and you can watch archived Frontline episodes from their site.

I made the switch a few months ago. NEVER AGAIN WILL I GO BACK TO DIALUP! I was visiting my grandma last week and didn’t dare even TRY to come to this board; it would have taken forever, and I was typing up her one phone line. Feh! Who has ONE phone line when they use dialup anymore???

Kazaa Lite!

Conspiratorially: But I didn’t tell you that.

The audio and video section of this site are worth a look. The soundboard prank calls are pretty good as well.

Oops…forgot to mention. You can find more interesting links here and here.

atomfilms is another neat site. Games and films. Check out the short “This Guy is Falling” or “The Critic.” Click on shockwave for loads of games.

Damn. One of those two links was supposed to be this link.

Better get a good firewall.

That’s a good idea, but I am so broke. Can you recommend a good, inexpensive firewall?

LittleBird, if you’re running Windows XP, you’ve got one built in…doubleclick my computer, right click ‘My Network Places’, select properties. Right Click Local Area Connection, select propertes, select the Advanced tab, and enable Internet connection firewall.

If you’re not using XP, go check out ZoneAlarm at www.zonelabs.com They’ve got a freebie version.

i went back to dialup. of course, i didnt count on getting kicked out of my shibby city-house…

I don’t mean this as a hijack (altho it is…) If I have two computers on a wireless network, to share one internet connection, does the hub act as a firewall?

I too am newly indoctrinated into the world of the cable modem and it kicks major league freaking butt. I’ve been checking out sites like www.weezer.com so I can watch some of the vids there. Naturally, I <cough> would NEVER <cough cough> endorse any of those evil file-sharing services out there, though I gather that the transfer speeds are ridiculous.

Of course, it took Charter 19 months longer than advertised to get broadband to where I live (outer suburbs of St. Louis) and DSL is nowhere near here.

When come back, bring pie.

I want high-speed.
I want high-speed.
I want high-speed.
I want high-speed.
I want high-speed.
I want high-speed.
I want high-speed.
I want high-speed.
I waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaant high-speed.

:: Sunspace posts by his creaky old 56k modem and thinks enviously of the condo developments* going up downtown where each unit has 100 mbps access, 20 times faster than DSL or cable ::

  • If you go to the condo developers’ site, click on the C symbol to start their flash-filled popup site window if you have disabled auto-popups, and select "Technology’, you get a section explaining their Amazing Hundred-Mbps Fibre Network. There’s a little test for speed. It says that their net access is 2430 times faster than my modem…
