The guy came down. He installed a cable to our house. He gave us the funky-monkey-lookin’ modem (with, might I add, the words 3Com U.S. Robotics on it, so I know it’s good). We turned on the computer. We found a 3 megabyte file. We downloaded it in 15 seconds, getting about 270 KBPS.

Speed! SPEEEEEED! No more 28.8 connections! No more getting disconnected! No more waiting hours and hours for a file larger than a couple megs to download! No more waiting hours and hours for porno movie clips… I mean, uh… umm… nevermind.
The clincher was when, while downloading a file, I picked up the phone and heard a dial tone. I nearly spooged my pants right then and there.
Oh man… the only way things could get better now is if I could get laid…
I feel your joy. Last year, we went from a 28.8 to a cable modem, and the exhilaration was almost overwhelming. Of course, we then proceeded to download so many files that our hard drive is pretty much full, but there is a dark side to everything.
Plus, the three friends we had left were thrilled to hear that they could occasionally phone us and possibly have us answer.

I have to give up my DSL connection when I leave school in about 1 week.
I had so much fun with this high speed connection. At home the phone lines would start smoking @ 1.3 and catch fire @ 2.6 KB/s (that’s with a 56k modem too). So ANYTHING over 5 KB/s is good to me. :-/
I get an avg. of 30 KB/s here in Pensacola.
I remember getting our cable modem. Same type - 3Com US Robotics. Blazing downloads, it’s great! My record is a 6K song off Napster in 7 seconds! It makes my 56K friends sick.
I also made sure I got a router - besides allowing more than one pc to share the connection, like Mooney252 says, you’re wide open to attack if you leave your computer on.
Is that 270 Kilobits per second, or kilobytes? And do you have Cable, or DSL? Coz where I live, Cable only runs at 256 kiloBITS per second, which is about 5 times faster than a 56k modem.

I can’t cable or DSL where I live. It comes to within 3 miles of here and then stops. I’ve got a 56k modem and it’s slower than shit. It downloads at about 3-4 kps/s(?).
Now I’m limping along mouseless since my mouse died last night. You would think this would be enough to make me walk away from the computer wouldn’t you?
But Nooooooo! I like a challenge. I’ve got big plans. I’m going to add another 20 gigs of hard drive and another 128 of Ram when I have my cd-rw and Dvd drives installed in the next week or so. I’ve got the equipment, I just need to take it to the PC doctor. Now that I think of it, maybe the mouse was jealous and thought it needed upgraded too.
