A pound (mass) of feathers weighs less than a pound of gold for two reasons: (1) most of it is farther from the center of the earth and therefore feels less gravitational force, and (2) it’s larger and displaces more air so therefore experiences more buoyancy.

Buoancy does not make something weigh less. If you had a pound of gold feathers, they would be just as buoyant as a pound of bird feathers and they would still weigh less.

A pound of gold feathers would have less volume than a pound of bird feathers, and therefore displaces less air. The force of buoyancy is proportional to the amount of fluid displaced. The weight of anything immersed in a fluid is reduced by the weight of the fluid it displaces. A canoe floats while a rock with the same mass sinks because the canoe is larger and displaces more water, and the upward buoyancy force exceeds the downward gravitational force.

Why would a pound of gold feathers have less volume?

It would take a lot fewer feathers made of gold to make up a pound than would natural feathers, hence far less volume,

Volume is mass divided by density. Since gold has a higher density than feathers (citation needed), a given mass of gold will have a smaller volume than the same mass of feathers.

This off topic conversation is getting out of hand!

Oh wait, there is no topic . . . let’s talk of this no more and let it die.

Volume is when my amplifier goes to eleven.

Just what I said.

Why don’t you just make 10 louder and make 10 be the top number and make that a little louder?
