"Bend Over for the Trojan" - The 0-16 NFL Season Thread (2017 ed.)

They only played 14 games up until 1978, so 0-14-2 would not happen before then.

Yeah I was really wrong on the Browns. I didn’t think they’d be contending for a playoff spot or anything but I thought they’d at least be decent. Supposedly they had rebuilt their O-line. But looks like same old Browns.

The Chargers lose another close one, but at least this loss ended with a normal clock killing drive and not craziness.

The 49ers snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, even taking a lead in overtime. But no, a Cardinals TD late in the extra period sealed it.

The Giants get a second walk-off loss from a field goal in as many weeks.

The Browns weaken up even more to let the other Ohio team know who’s the boss when it comes to institutional suckitude.

Circle November 12th on your calendars, everybody. The 49ers and Giants, teams who combined have nine Super Bowl championships, will likely be playing for their first win this season, and also the first pick in the draft.

no offense but I’m glad certain overblown teams from eras past are in the crapper for a few years …

Sam is only a sophomore. What if he decides to stay put?

If the draft were held today, Rosen would go before Darnold anyways, I think.

Of the three remaining teams (49ers, Browns, Giants) I actually think the Giants have the best chance of going 0-16 just because of how disappointing the season has been, and that they’ll be literally starting guys signed off the street at WR.

Most people capable of playing wide receiver in the NFL have houses, you know. They’re not exactly “on the street”.

Time for Giants to fire the moron of a GM, think about changing coaches after the season and trade a few of the guys that will be free agents at the end of the season.

The O-Line has been a problem for the Giants for years. Year after year, Jerry Reese has failed to really address the problem and has wasted a large portion of Eli’s career.

<blinks>

Really? In ten full seasons under Jerry Reese, the Giants have won two Super Bowls. In that same span, there is literally no team in the league that has done better, and only one (the Patriots) that have even done the same. If that’s wasting Eli’s career, then every QB not named Tom Brady has also had his career wasted since 2007.

I guess you could argue that the 2007 Super Bowl team was really more Ernie Accorsi’s team (although Reese did draft their starting tight end and cornerback as well as their leading rusher in the Super Bowl). But that 2011 Super Bowl was all Reese; other than Eli and Justin Tuck, nearly every meaningful player on that team was either drafted or acquired by Reese. In addition to Ross and Bradshaw, that included Victor Cruz, Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham, Jason Pierre-Paul, all of those defensive tackles they rotated around that year, Antrel Rolle, and 2 of the 5 starting offensive lineman.

I mean, your milage may vary (and obviously does). But as a Giant fan, I’m pretty happy with Jerry’s Reese’s work from the last decade. I’ll take two Super Bowls and six of ten seasons above .500 pretty much every time!

That said, Ben McAdoo sucks. He should be fired, and preferably have green slime poured on his head on his way out the door.

Well, one of those QBs was 1(1) while the other was 6(199). I should think one should be able to do decently with a 1(1) QB – unless he is just too damn expensive to build a team around.

I would pick the Browns to have the best chance because of their chronic instability at QB (they just benched Kizer), and because they’re the Browns. As long as the Jints have Eli, there’s still a good chance they’ll pick off a game or two.
“On the street” is common slang for “unemployed”, ftr.

Do me one favor, look at the team Reese inherited. Then look to see the changes he made to the O-Line over the next 5 years. I believe you’ll find he allowed an inherited O-line to get old all together. Since that time he has failed in fixing the O-line for next 5-6 years.

Well as soon as I peg the Giants of having the best shot of 0-16 they go out and win before the other two teams. This is why I don’t bet on sports.

Specifically it means they’re not playing professional football; usually when I hear it, it’s someone who has never played before or hasn’t for a long time. Different from being a free agent (which just means they’re not under contract with a team, but they are entertaining offers).

I think the implication is that the player was a “nobody” prior to being signed to a team.

The 49ers have too much talent to go winless, and even the Browns aren’t hopeless. Nobody is going 0-16 this year. In fact, I don’t think anyone will finish with fewer than 3 wins.

What does it take to go 0-16?

Option 1: "Historic Losing Streak"

No team in NFL history has lost five consecutive games each by three points or less. Until the 49ers this season, that is.

It’s going to take true grit and dogged determination to keep that up. Especially now that they’re going with firy rookie QB CJ Beathard* and defensive stalwarts Eric Reid and Reuben Foster are set to return.

Option 2: "Be The Browns"
Yet another starting quarterback, same results. 3 INTs and a game recap that reads like a comedy routine.

What the hell happened in Denver?

*: as a 49er fan, BEATHARD MAKES ME MEATHARD

Oh, I know. It was just a joke I heard by…shit, can’t remember, this summer at Leambeau, probably during the lead up to Family Night. I just got a kick out of it and thought it was funny.

I’m still disappointed the announcers all pronounce it as “beth-erd” and not “beat-hard”.

Looks like Darnold is doing a good enough job of that while still at USC.
