Yes, I know that I’m a bit late starting this thread, but my mom mails the Sunday comics to me, and there’s no legal way to see Opus strips online. So I read them almost a week late.
That said, I think that Opus is starting to reach the old Bloom County level again. Up to now, the strip has had high points (Binkley’s first kiss) and low points, but the high points have been relatively sparse. May 31, however, with Opus breaking up, was pure gold, and then on June 7 we see Bill the Cat back (and running for office, to boot!). Since I think that a lot of the weakness of the strip was the lack of the other old regulars (or at least any regulars other than Opus), I’m feeling very optimistic about this development.
Our hero has landed a job as a cartoonist at a newspaper. He’s got a Segway scooter and a sleazy room somewhere. In last week’s episode, a group of fatcat Neo-Cons are looking for a pliable candidate for mayor. “Oh, no,” thinks Opus, “not…him!” Yes! In the last panel, there’s Bill the Cat, working in a Garfield suit, but passed out, with the Garf-head off. A little kid is crying, “Garfield is dead, Mommy!” Oh, yes, Berkeley Breathed is back.
Had landed. Remember, the GPS describes him as a “recently-fired cartoonist”. Apparently he didn’t weather that phone call from the Head Honcho very well.
Very doubtful. Coming up with six gags a week is pretty tough. Besides, BB has convinced himself that he’s committing art on the Sunday pages, with big panels and a color palette that most newspapers can’t handle.
I was a very big fan of his work. Still am. I’ve read his old stuff and it still holds up. But he recycling the old characters and old jokes. This Sunday (6/13), Bill the Cat shows up, and the whole strip is of the two of them meeting. yawn
