Maybe I’m missing some subtle point? The ways I can think of to reach first:

  1. Hit
  2. Walk
  3. Hit batter
  4. Dropped third strike
  5. Force play
  6. Fielder’s choice
  7. Pinch runner

A force play is a fielder’s choice.

However, not all fielder’s choices are force plays.

And the column was about getting to first base WITHOUT hitting the ball.

You also forgot about reaching first base on catcher’s interference.
