I was just watching POTC a gain and I was struck at what an bsolutely superb acting job Johny Depp was doing, the highest order I would claim. I noticed it the first time, but this time I got to really pay attention to it. However, given that the movie was fairly comedic (apologies to Kevin Kline and Misa Tomei) and the movie was pretty light is there any chance he could garner a Best Actor nomination?
Nomination, yes, I have no doubt. However, if he wins over Elijah Wood (Wood for ROTK), they’ll have me to deal with.
Maybe Best Supporting. He wasn’t really the lead in Pirates, even if he dominated every scene he was in.
I think POTC is too genre to be considered, but I’ve been wrong before.
He should be nominated for either supporting or best actor. He clearly has been to Singapore and Geoffry Rush matched him beautifully, Arrrrrgh.
I agree with Miller. If Depp is nominated, it’ll be for Best Supporting.
Man, maybe I had too much egg nog, but my first impression of the thread title was that it was asking “who would be the best actor to play Depp in a biopic.” You know, “best actor for Depp.”
:smack:
Good thing the holidays are upon us, I need a break!
He’s got a better chance in Mystic River. It’s a drama, and he’s unbelievably good.
Depp isn’t in Mystic River. That’s Sean Penn.
I do think Depp deserves to be nominated for PotC. Great, great performance. However, there is a guaranteed nominee who deserves the win more — Bill Murray in Lost in Translation.
Paul Giamatti should be nominated for American Splendor, but he won’t.
Heh. No egg nog for me, and I thought the same thing at first.
Nah. It’s a great movie, but it’s sheer mindless entertainment, and the Academy has a preference for depth and heartwarmingness.
On the other hand, the MTV Movie Awards might be a different story…

Heavens, must be something going around.
The two best performances I saw this year were a swishy pirate and a murderous Smeagol.
In POTC, it seemed to me that there wasn’t one lead actor. Bloom and Depp shared.
In ROTK, everyone was a supporting character, no real lead at all.
I might actually watch the Oscars this year, depending on the noms, of course.
I stand corrected.
Well, more accurately, I sit corrected.
Let him win, then, and I’ll applaud cheerfully, when I read the paper the next morning, as I don’t usually bother watching the ceremony any more.
I think, honestly, that Elijah did a better job in his subtlties in showing us a deteriorating Frodo then Andy did in reprising his role as a murderous Gollum. Frodo, to me, showed a great deal more depth than Gollum ever could, regardless of who played whom.
All IMHO, of course.
Johnny Depp has an outside shot at an Oscar nomination (for lead; he won’t be pushed in supporting), but I wouldn’t count on it. He won’t win. However thought Elijah Wood will win or even get nominated should smoke less crack.
You have my sword…even if it’s an empty offer because I don’t really have one.
Billy Boyd is also deserving of a supporting actor nod, I think, though it’d more likely go to Sean Astin, and in any case I fully expect RotK to be screwed over by the Academy’s anti-genre bias. Gits.
Fanboys … please. Elijah Woods for Best Actor? Put down the D&D rule books and take a deep breath. Elijah Woods will not win for Best Actor.
I’m a hay-uge Depp fan, but I agree with FisherQueen’s initial assessment … I don’t think the Academy will give him the credit he deserves because of the tenor of the film.
I think Bill Murray or Paul Giamatti (as mentioned) would both be great choices, but I’ll go right ahead piss everybody off and say that I think it’s going to be dear old Mr. Crowe again for Master and Commander.
OK, we’ve got your sword, Katisha, my bow…we’re gonna need someone with an axe in here…anyone?
I’ve a funny feeling it’s gonna end up in my head, however.
I, too, think ROTK will be looked over for the sole reason that “it can’t possibly be good; it’s “fantasy”.”
Jack Batty, I’m a fanGIRL, and I’d like specific reasons why you don’t think Wood will win. (I don’t mean that in a beligerant way, of course; merely requesting an opinion.) He’s done a beyond incredible job at fleshing out every possible aspect and essence of Frodo imaginable. I’m certainly not in it for his eyes this time.
