Unbeknownst to me, Mrs. Slug has developed a sudden affinity for jazz. So I have taken her to a couple places in Philly. But I don’t think the jazz music scene here is all that big.
Since we travel pretty regularly, I am interested in knowing where we could find the wife some really good places to go.
Atlanta has a couple of good spots. By that I mean, 3 or so. Outside of New York or L.A. - which I’m guessing have plenty of jazz places - those are fairly good numbers.
Cleveland has Nighttown and The Bop Stop for clubs…I think there might be one more too. Also, we have the fantastic Cleveland Jazz Orchestra which can be found in various places around town.
Tons in NYC, Chicago, LA, SF, Seattle. Kansas City - home of Charlie Parker - has a solid jazz rep. New Orleans - well, it is the birthplace of jazz…
Tons in pretty much any urban setting - wherever there is a mix of styles and cultures, you’ll find jazz. Get on line and I bet with the right Googling, you can find either generic City Search-type Yellow Pages that will feature jazz, or a jazz-specific site with listings. Jazz aficionados are a passionate geeky bunch (I say that with respect and love) who seek each other out and share stuff like this…
If you’re in the Kansas City area you should check out the 18th & Vine area. There is the American Jazz Museum plus a jazz club (The Blue Room) and a larger theater (the Gem) all in the same block. (And the Negro Leagues Baseball museum is in the same block as well.)
