I’m sure there is a place to hear live jazz in Dallas. I just haven’t found it. Does your city have a place which features live jazz?
If you’re ever in Indianapolis, check out the Chatterbox on Massachusetts Ave. There are others, but that one is the best known.
Atlanta Jazz Fest is coming up again.
We have nothing world-class, but we do have Melissa Bledsoe Fisher, who swings pretty hard at Sullivan’s every Friday. She plays piano and sings standards.
The After Thought in Little Rock on Tuesday nights.
In DC, go to Blues Alley in Goergetown. Here in Alexandria, there’s a little spot in Lod Town simply called “Live Jazz.”
Uh, yeah.
The Iridium. Sweet Rhythm. The Village Vanguard. The Up and Over Jazz Cafe. Birdland. The Blue Note. The Carlyle Hotel. The Jazz Standard. Joe’s Pub. Barbes. The Five Spot. Arthur’s Tavern. Small’s. The Garage. The Time Cafe. The Jazz Gallery. The Knitting Factory. Smoke. The Red Blazer.
Thank you for reminding me why I live here.
There are a few places in the LA area; this is my favorite. I’m kind of picky about what I’ll listen to, though, so I don’t really go out much (that and it’s kind of boring to go alone–too dark to read between sets). Although it isn’t be the best venue, I’m going to catch Gutbucket at Cafe Metropol on May 5. I haven’t been able to persuade anyone else to go, especially anyone who’ve I exposed to them; I guess the Ornette Coleman “free jazz” type of music just isn’t that appealing to many.
Stranger
Pretty much anywhere.
I curse you with a deep abiding fierceness.
Yardbird Suite, The Commercial Hotel, Sidetrack Cafe, and every summer, Jazz City International Music Festival.
Here in Sacramento, you could try the On Broadway Cafe House of Jazz. Apparently, it’s this cafe. On Broadway. That features Jazz music. Or so I’ve heard.
And if you happen to be into Dixieland, you must not miss The Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, celebrating its 32nd anniversary this Memorial Day.
When I lived in Seattle in the early 90s, there were two venues: Demetriou’s Jazz Alley and Thursday nights at the Redhook Brewery. Wonder if either is still there?
Really nice upscale club called Zanzibar Blue, which is, I believe, owned by the same folks who run Warmdaddy’s, a blues club. Plus, of course, various concerts and minor appearances all over town.
Stinkum touched on this, but jazz is alive, well, and kicking in Indianapolis. Every Friday’s Indianapolis Star has a Weekend section with a full guide to who’s playing where. I’d send you to the Jazz Kitchen in Broadripple. The Indiana Roof downtown is a beautiful venue for top jazz acts.
Yoshi’s in Oakland, CA is one of the best jazz clubs in the country, IMHO.
To which I will add the Cornelia Street Cafe in the Village, American Legion Post #398 on West 132nd, Copeland’s Restaurant, EZ’s Woodshed, and the Lenox Lounge in Harlem, Marjorie Eliot’s apartment in Washington Heights, and where I hear most of my live jazz, the subways.
Downtown St Paul has the Artists’ Quarter and downtown Minneapolis has the Dakota.
Let’s see, there’s the Elephant Room, Cafe Mundi, the Black Cat Lounge, Club DeVille, Flipnotics, Jazz on Sixth, One World Theatre, Victory Grill, and probably several more.
