I’d like to change my vote to Kiss the Gir. I didn’t really think of it as a love song, simply because it wasn’t performed by one of the romantic protagonists. However, I think it should qualify.
Having said that, Won’t Say I’m in Love has more impressive vocals, and it comes in at a close second.
I particularly liked how that song was reprised as the warriors dressed up as concubines.
I think that I’d have to go with Beauty and the Beast for my favorite Disney love song, with This is the Night (Bella Notte) as my second favorite. I’m not sure if Hunchback of Notre Dame’s Heaven’s Light/Hellfire qualifies as a love song, but the combo is certainly powerful. The movie was almost ruined by that obnoxious gargoyle, though.
And here I thought I was going to get to be the first to mention “Bella Notte”. Definitely one of my favorites, probably because it plays during one of the most romantic Disney scenes ever, two dogs sharing spaghetti and meatballs.
I also like “A Whole New World”.
One of my favorite, non-romantic Disney songs also comes from Lady and the Tramp. “We are Siamese, if you please.”
Kiss the Girl is great and it had a great sequence to go with it. The last shot of Ariel, who definitly plans to do more than kiss him is really great. Can You Feel the Love Tonight, especially the B’way version is great because actual sex is going happening, in an very implied, off screen, symbolic way. Just like I Bring You a Song from Bambi. Beauty and Beast as sung by Mrs. Potts/Angela Landsbury is fantastic. Since she is the voice of wisdom for the movie it works great, much better than pop stars singing it.
*Some Day My Prince Will Come * form Snow White
Once Upon a Dream from Sleeping Beauty
My favorite?
A Whole New World certainly presses all the right buttons, but I would also like to nominate When She Loved Me (from Toy Story 2 - by Sarah McLachlan) - It is quite melancholy, but I think it qualifies as a love song nonetheless.
I was just going to post this. Hunchback isnt the best Disney film, not by a long way. But I think I like the music from it better than any other Disney film.
AWWW, MAN!!! It had left my head overnight. Damn you, Lynn. This should totally be a bannable offense. I’m writing a strongly worded letter to someone.
Seconded. I think the music from Bambi is severely underappreciated. I Bring You A Song, in particular, is just about the most glorious musical selection in the entire Disney canon.
Also seconded. At the tender age of 10, I fell in love with the voice singing that song. I’ve never quite gotten over it.
I can get behind the idea of the gargoyles in the film because Q needed someone to talk to, who could talk back. However, the obnoxious gargoyle was truly cringeworthy. And the gargoyles singing A Guy Like You should not have been in the movie at all. I don’t know who thought that was a good idea, but it really took away from the movie. I realize that Disney had to make some changes from the book (after all, the book is a real downer), but some of the improvements were just not good at all.
