Best Disney love song?

For me it’s a toss-up between “Beauty and the Beast” as sung by the teapot and “Won’t Say I’m In Love” from Hercules. The former because it’s very sweet without being sickening, and the latter because, darn it, it’s just a good tune. What’s your favorite and why?

My favorite Disney love song is “A Whole New World” from Aladdin, both for the exhilaration of the song and Lea Salonga’s faboo performance. And, of course, the guy to did the singing for Aladdin was also the singing voice for Jonathan in an episode of Buffy, so that gets it extra obsure six-degrees points from me.

I would have to agree with the choice of Won’t Say I’m in Love. Susan Egan’s throaty performance was absolutely unbelievable.

My absolute favorite is still Part of Your World, but I guess that’s not a love song.

“Love Is A Song” from Bambi.

It’s a tossup for me: either Beauty and the Beast, or A Whole New World.

Another vote for Won’t Say I’m in Love. Damn good song; damn good vocals.

I’d also add Kiss the Girl from The Little Mermaid. The flamingo harmonies put it over the top for me. It is possibly my favourite song Disney ever produced.

Whole New World - Aladdin
Kiss The Girl - Little Mermaid
Something There - Beauty and the Beast

“Kiss the Girl”

“Won’t Say I’m in Love” is a really good song - and I like it a lot. And of course “Once Upon a Dream,” is way up on the list. But “Kiss the Girl” wins.

What a great topic. Disney has really had some lovely music over the years.

I’ll definitely cite the two “A Whole New World” and “Beauty and the Beast” nominees. They exemplify the best qualities of Disney songs – simplicity, honesty and charm.

I’d also give mention to “Something There,” also from Beauty, both for the melody and especially the lyrics. Many Disney love song lyrics feature a character espousing how much they love another character. “Something There” does an admirable job of offering character and plot development – best of all, it shows us a couple falling first in like, then in love, with one another.

Kind of cheating here, but I’ve gotta give props to “Once Upon a Dream,” from Sleeping Beauty. It’s cheating because of course the music isn’t original, it’s from Tchaikovsky’s ballet, but the music is so awesome I can’t not include it. Plus, Disney’s dream-theme songs are almost all gorgeous and heartfelt. This one is no exception.

Finally, if one extends the meaning of ‘love song’, I offer the ultimate tear-jerker: “Baby Mine” from Dumbo.

I actually brought up BatB in another thread, but one of the neat things about Something There is that it shares a melody with Belle… and the verse in Belle foreshadows what she sings in Something There:

From Belle:

Something There:

Like I said… a lot of thought went into the music in Beauty and the Beast and it shows. It’s easily my favorite soundtrack.

“Baby Mine” from “Dumbo”

My daughter votes for “A Whole New World.”
(She’s watched the DVD of Aladdin somewhere around 200 times now, I’d estimate.)

I can’t watch “Baby Mine” without bawling like, well, a baby. It is a good song. But then, Dumbo is full of good songs; I’m fond of the “Pink Elephant” song and “When I See an Elephant Fly” but they’re not love songs.

How could I forget “Kiss the Girl”? :smack:

My personal favorite is from Pete’s Dragon - “I’ll be your Candle on the Water.” “Beauty and the Beast” from the movie of the same name is a close second.

I think it morphs into a love song when Ariel sings to Eric on the beach after she saves him. That was always my favorite part of the movie, though I couldn’t recite to you the lyrics like I could for the rest of the song.

Hands. Down. Best version, Bonnie Raitt.

Love ‘Kiss the Girl’, but top vote has to go to ‘A Whole New World’. This stuff is classic.

I like that one, but I vote for Kiss the Girl. I like the Sebastian version the best, especially when he roll his eyes at the seagull’s attempts and says, "If you want somet’ing done right, you have to do it yourself…first, we have to set…The Mood…"

It starts out lovely and sweet, then bangs in full steam.

Slight hijack, but my favorite Disney song is Make a Man Out of You from Mulan. I know it’s not a love song, but the vocals and how Mulan figured out how to get the arrow out of the post just give me chills.

This thread really makes me want to go and watch all the Disney movies again.
I really liked “This Is the Night” from Lady and the Tramp. I’d have to see the movies to compare it to the others though.

This thread (and the great new release of The Little Mermaid) is really making me miss Howard Ashman.

I’ll vote for Kisss the Girl.
