Best Internet-based Jazz Radio: What are Your Favorite Stations?

I’ve got a respectable collection of jazz CDs, but really enjoy streaming Internet jazz from all over the US and world. It’s hit and miss, frankly, but when it’s good, it’s great. What are your favorite (non-satellite) jazz stations, including college jazz stations?

Some of my faves:

  1. KXJZ, California’s Cap Radio
  2. Atlanta Blue Sky radio, AtlantaBlueSky.com
  3. WGBO, New York Jazz FM 88
  4. WKMS, a sparkling little gem located at Murray State University, in western Kentucky. Learned about this one during a business trip to Nashville.
  5. WMOT, tiny Middle Tennessee State University. Ditto above.
  6. WPFR, Pacifica Radio, located in Washington, DC

I can pick up WMOT on the radio, but I usually choose to listen to it online. When they’re in one of their moods to play things I don’t particularly care for, or when I’m in a mood for a more West Coast approach, I switch to KKJZ.

Bob Parlocha’s show is on WMOT from 9 PM until 6 AM weekdays (longer on weekends) and If I’m on the computer during those hours I make a point of hearing him. He’s by far the most knowledgeable DJ I know of.

The NPR shows on Sundays are good for history. WMOT carries quite a few of them. Marian McPartland is probably best for consistency and Nancy Wilson’s show is good for history.

I’ll be giving your list a try for some variety.

I’ll take an opportunity to plug http://www.luxuriamusic.com. They are officially an eclectic station, but they do play a lot of jazz. Where I found the BBC Orchestra version of ‘Sing, Sing, Sing’ which puts all others to shame.

WWOZ, New Orleans.

Here’s Bob Parlocha’s homepage in case you want to find a station where the schedule differs from WMOT’s.

I’ve often wondered when Bob sleeps.

If you go to www.radiotower.com you can search for stations by genre. They have quite a few jazz stations.

http://www.cod.edu/wdcb/wdcb_online.htm - in suburban Chicago. Great station.

So far, I’ve streamed them for 15 minutes today. Good stuff, many thanks.
