Best media player

Of the free media players available now, which one is best? I mean which one plays the most types of video files?

I use the Windows Media Player, but sometimes I have to donwload new codecs. Is there a better player out there?

I also have Quicktime Pro (not free) that is good for converting file types, but I like WMP better.

This is in my opinion the current best media player out there. For the serious collecter of electronic media, this is wonderful.
