Definitely one of the best. It’s so annoying on other boards to ask for cites and have people tell you, “Well, God said it, it’s in the Bible”, or, “what do u mean i can say what i want its my opinion and its a free country go away!”

Yeah, usually I’m content to lurk. I started with Cecil’s columns. Then I found the fourms and went back fifty pages in the General Questions thread. It’s only been in the past two days where I started viewing the other forums. Quite a lot to read here. It has really affected where I spend my online time.
A little side rant regarding the hazing comment. I’m a moderator at a gaming site and it’s really disappointing to see new member’s posting innocent questions with titles like, “Noob question”. It’s as though they expect to be jumped on for not understanding the game as well as other’s do. I never understood that until I ventured out into some more unsavory parts of the internet. It’s annoying to see someone hoard knowledge over another, even though they were one time in that position too. [/endrant]

Ah, my favorite guy.
Although the SDMB has had its share of jerks, bigots, fanatics and a few full-blown whackaloons, it’s still the best place online for reasoned discussion on almost any topic, with people who can write a coherent sentence.

Sorry, but the first link he posted had a bit of wretched disinformation, it rubbed me the wrong way since I have a close relative that has to take the medication.
As for your OP: I thought that I had figured you out as being on the conservative side, due to religious reasons. 
However, this shows the wisdom of never putting anyone in the ignore list, all points of view should be considered. Even a poster one does not like (not thinking of you here, since I already liked your posts) will produce something that will enlighten you. In this board, that is always a good possibility every day.
It was the mix of so many points of view that convinced me to become a member in the first message board I ever joined.
If only the hamsters were more capable, (got this reply killed 3 times already :mad: ) this would be the perfect message board! OTOH, it is the quality of the members and moderators that makes the difference, so I will settle for just “the best message board”

Yes, I am the only christian I know in real life who is not a Republican.
I’m not a Democrat either.
It makes me feel totally alone in that.
This board has taught me a Lot, as many old time posters here can attest to.
It has taught me (finally) to keep an Open Mind, always look at the other persons viewpoint, especially when they disagree with you.
Sometimes, they may actually be right and you wrong.
Only board for that, this is!

Console or computer games? What system, if console? What genre? There’s a LOT of gamers on this board. Most game threads are in Cafe Society, by the way.
That’s right, and in my opinion all those types of people make things much more interesting, and funny.
I lurked on and off for about two years and I finally registered a week or so ago, so I at least know what all the obscure references mean. I love this place, it’s definitely the only worthwhile message board I’ve ever come across.

Yeah, it’s weird how expecting substantiation strikes many people as over-demanding.
Anyway, I have a question: in what other boards are substantiated arguments valued over mere opinions? I haven’t visited other boards that much.

I think I lurked for about forty-five minutes.
While it’s wonderful to say that you like this board, saying it as an indirect way of insulting another board and specifically people on that board just isn’t really…what’s the best way to say this…nice?

I agree Vanilla, this is the coolest, most excellentest board ever.
Well lel, notice that in my case I did not say this was “the best message board ever.” That title IMHO belongs to a different, more reliable one… and with better people.
Of course, I would think it would be even more bad manners to minimize were one came from, especially since it was in this place that I learned that those other cool boards existed. For a guy that likes the Internet, I am a very insular person.
We used to give out toasters…but there has been a run on them by those OTHER people who give out toasters and the national toaster shortage has reached epic proportions. We are now giving out stadium blankets.
I’ll always remember the post where someone asked “Is anything too sick for you people to discuss?” and someone responded:
Too sick, no. Too stupid, yes.
That sums up the SDMB perfectly.
