Best movies of 2000 (help me choose)

Well, between work and the SDMB, I don’t get out much. So, I don’t have a clue what good movies are out there. The last movie I saw at an actual theatre was Gladiator in July. Before that, maybe Toy Story 2 (with my daughter) last Christmas.

Anyways, now that I finally have a few days off, the thought of a seeing good film is actually quite exciting (I told you - I don’t get out much).

So, what do you recommend? Of the current/recent crop, what’s the best bet?

(If you want, feel free to hijack this thread into a “best movies of 2000” opinion poll. I’ll pay attention).

Well, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is supposed to be quite good. I would give you my personal opinion, but I can’t find a friggin’ theater that’s showing it in my state. :frowning:

I enjoyed “Cast Away” tremendously. It wasn’t perfect, but it certainly kept me enthralled, moved me, and stuck with me long after it was over.

“What Women Want”, on the other hand, was Movie Chinese Food, but damn tasty going down!

I agree with the vote for Cast Away it was just a darn good movie. Other than that I haven’t seen any recent new movies.

I loved “The Original Kings of Comedy.” It was basically a grainy film of four stand-up comics - Cedric the Entertainer, Bernie Mac, D.H. Hughley, and Steve Harvey - from their comedy tour. It was hilarious. I laughed so hard my stomach muscles ached the next day. I laughed so hard I tinkled in my undies. I laughed until I cried. I saw it three times in the theater this summer. Hughley was the funniest, but the rest kick ass too.

I just saw “You Can Count on Me” this past weekend. It’s an indie, only playing in one local theater, but definitely worth however far you have to go to see it. Masterful - brilliant - astounding. Laura Linney and Mark Ruffalo (sp?) should be very very famous after their performances here.

"Charlies Angels", “Miss Congeniality,” and “What Women Want” were fluffy but funny. And I bet your daughter would love “102 Dalmations”. I hate Disney movies but it was still pretty good.

"Unbreakable" was excellent, too, though a lot of posters will disagree with me. Very suspenseful, scary too.

Hope that helps.

Here’s one poster that won’t disagree with you. I thought that Unbreakable was the best movie I’ve seen this year. I think it’s a very original and underrated film, although it does have one scene in it that needed work (the one where the kid is pointing the gun at his father…some of the dialogue in that scene, particularly from the mother, is painfully bad.

Haven’t seen Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon yet, but will if it plays in a theater near me.

As a big animation fan, I would vote on Chicken Run.

Best current - probably Cast Away.

Best of the year? Well, I loved Chicken Run, but I have to go with “Best in Show” buy the guys who did “Spinal Tap” and “Waiting for Guffman”. Absolutely hysterical. Go see it. Right now.

“By”, not “buy”. Sheesh. Caught it just too late…

American Psycho
Fight Club
Gladiator
Unbreakable
Titus

The real answer, though, is obvious:

Dungeons & Dragons is the best movie of 2000, and quite possibly the best film in the history of cinema. You should all rush right out and see it immediately. You should see every showing of it back-to-back for three solid days, maybe four. You should bring all your friends and your entire extended family to see it with you. You should buy extra tickets. You should ensure that every showing of this movie is sold out.

And I’m not just saying this because I don’t want the company that makes all the D&D products to go out of business, nooooo…

God, everything sucked this year. Gladiator sucked. I didn’t feel anything at all watching it, and they had 2 1/2 hours to reel me in! Cast Away, (why can’t it be friggin’ Castaway like a normal movie?) again, sucked… The selling point it watchable enough, (though when you get right down to it, it’s just a guy on an island) but the heavy-handed symbolism and last 30 minutes were pure hell. Can’t ANYONE make a movie under two hours these days? 100 minutes would be preferable! Oh yeah, needless to say MI:2 sucked. I can’t even remember going to much else. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is good, but most of the people who LOVE it love it because it’s new to them, and it’s nothing new to me. So as far as American cinema goes, (and of course, that’s what people REALLY mean when they say “best of the year,” mutter grumble) there was one good movie… Though even that’s debatable. CTHD is a Columbia release, but Taiwan has entered it for the Academy Awards. Whatever. Well, I guess this wasn’t actually much help, was it? Guess I’m just a grouch. I guess I’ll add something productive if anything crosses my mind. I will admit there were a handful of notables I opted out on, but considering that people shower praise on “Gladiator” and “Cast Away” I’d be surprised if they did anything for me either.

I’m surprised American Psycho isn’t getting more media nods of nominations this year for greatest movie of 2000. My reasons for why this may be is because A) It came out in April, and because of the typical media attention span, it has been forgotten and B) Lions Gate, the company that made this movie, is horrible on advertising their movies and are doing nothing to promote this movie for the Golden Globes and Oscars.

What about Billy Elliot? I loved that movie. I was sort of dragged to the theatre to see it, but I’m glad I capitulated. It is funny, heartwarming, heartbreaking, inspirational and not at all the chic flic I was expecting. The final scene sent chills down my spine.

BTW, has anyone seen Quills yet?

I’m keeping track of your “votes”. Still too early to tell what wins. And thanks for your input!

It seems to me that the year’s best movies might all be coming out this week – I’m referring to Traffic, State and Main and O Brother, Where Art Thou. Of course, I haven’t seen them yet so I might be completely off base… but based on what I’ve heard, they sound very watchable and intelligent.

I feel so pretentious here, but the best movies I saw this year were Requim for a Dream and Girl on the Bridge. Girl is a French film that’s probably pretty tough to find; it only came to my town for a week or so.

As a comic book fan, cartoonaholic and sci-fi geek, I’m going to have to vote for X-Men and Titan A.E.. If you’re looking for family films or comedy, try The Emperor’s New Groove. I wasn’t expecting it to be good, but it was actually pretty funny.

I’ve heard that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is fantastic, but I doubt it’ll be shown in any theaters near me.

“But I’m a Cheerleader” was absolutely hilarious. I’m pretty cure it came out this year, since it’s a new release at Blockbuster.
