Best Rolling Stones Cut.

Hmmm…

Ventilator Blues, Exile On Main Street?

Gimme Shelter, Let It Bleed?
Waddya think?

Paint It Black
Monkey Man
Bitch
Let’s Spend the Night Together
Jumpin Jack Flash
Brown Sugar
Gimme Shelter
Shattered
Satisfaction
Sympathy for the Devil

In a completely different mood, but one of my all-time favorites (and I’m a major Stones fan), let’s not forget “Moonlight Mile.”

The beautifully produced Gimme Shelter off Let it Bleed with the haunting and ominous overlaying guitar and vocals has my vote.

Mick’s absolutely jumpin’ Brown Sugar off Sticky Fingers is my second choice.

My personal fave: “Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’”, from Sticky Fingers; in fact it’d place easily in my top five rock tunes ever. I’ve heard that extended sax/guitar workout hundreds, if not thousands, of times and never get tired of it.

After that, probably “Monkey Man”, then just about anything from Exile.

I was about twelve when “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” came out. If my life was saved by rock ‘n’ roll, it was that song that did it.

Monkey Man
Gimme Shelter
Let it Bleed
Brown Sugar
Bitch

Yeah, I didn’t even think about Sypmathy For The Devil or Moonlight Mile.

Among those not listed, Tumbling Dice and Paint It Black are a couple of my favorites.

My top 5

  1. “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking?”
  2. “We Love You”
  3. “Jumping Jack Flash”
  4. “The Last Time”
  5. “Gimme Shelter”

My two favourites have always been Paint it Black and Mother’s Little Helper, followed pretty closely by 19th Nervous Breakdown and Sympathy for the Devil.

Best? “Sympathy for the Devil.” Favorite? “Loving Cup.”

I noticed not much from the 80s and 90s (nothing?) was mentioned?

Can I at least offer Little T&A as a contender (and honestly that was early 80s - although not as early 80s as Emotional Rescue “She’s so Cold”).
Anyone got anything from the 90s?

(OK, my personal favorite is Gimme Shelter, with Can You Here Me Knocking second - again, 60s and 70s Rolling Stones)

From the 90s- “Thru and Thru”

my list…
Sympathy for the Devil
Gimme Shelter
You Can’t Always Get What You Want…from Love you Live
Wild Horses
Moonlight Mile
Tumbling Dice
Rocks Off
Happy
Shine A Light
Loving Cup
Soul Survivor
Beast of Burden
Before Make Me Run

Angie…

Have loved the Stones for many many years, but a beautiful blond girl from Switzerland, at the Steel Wheels concert in Munchen, Germany (MUNICH) in 88 or 89 (its all alittle foggy)put the iceing on the cake.

I’ll throw my vote to either “Stray Cat Blues” from Beggars Banquet or “Star Star” from Goats Head Soup. Just about anything from Between The Buttons or before (with the exception of most of Satanic Majesty) would be my third choice

I just finished a Rolling Stones CD. Here’s the track listing:

Monkey Man
Dancing With Mr. D
Memory Motel
Fingerprint File
Girl With Faraway Eyes
Miss You (the original mix, which is about 3 minutes longer)
Memo From Turner
Black Limousine
Get Offa My Cloud
Rip This Joint
Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’?
Gimme Shelter

Sympathy for the Devil by a nose over You Cain’t Always Git What You Want.

I’ve got to give it to Gimme Shelter, for the tension and release in the intro. The guitar doesn’t ever quite coalesce until after the drums come in, and their entrance is also a little scattered. The "ooh"s and the lack of bass or piano until that one moment, all make it great. From that point on the song just holds together perfectly. Great balance, great lyrics, great tune. It’s like watching a film of a hot yellow lightbulb being shattered by a rifle bullet, played backwards. All the sparks and glass and chaos all just sort of fall into place.

I give second place to Sympathy for the Devil for its studio production, good honky-tonk piano, great tune and lyrics, and for the first guitar lick after Mick yells “A-git down with it!”

Nice to see lots of mentions of Can’t You Hear Me Knocking. No mentions of Honky Tonk Women seems a little odd. I also love Melody (It was her second name) off Black and Blue.
