Best Rolling Stones Song - Multiple Choice

Choose as many as you like…

In addition to choices from the poll,
“Dandelion”
“My Obsession”
“No Expectations”
“Factory Girl”
“Salt of the Earth”
All the rest of Sticky Fingers, especially “Dead Flowers”
No doubt a few others I’m not recalling just now

I’m going to stick with my choice from the original poll, “Get Off Of My Cloud” from Love You Live (mashed up with “If You Can’t Rock Me”).

You forgot “Out of Time”

Nice to see “Rough Justice” on the list. But you left off possibly the greatest Stones song of all, “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking.”

I figured that was a trick to catch somebody who was checking every box, or something.

“Ain’t Too Proud To Beg” was a Temptations song. A good cover by the Stones though. I think “The Last Time” should be in the list.

Also “Moonlight Mile”.

Actually, it was a Whitfield/Holland song; the Temps covered it too.

Good call on ‘The Last Time’, though.
mmm

Good catch. Agreed.
mmm

Rocks Off should be on the list too. Best opening track in rock and roll.

Mother’s Little Helper is my favourite.

I think we already had this thread a year or two ago. Gimme Shelter won, IIRC, buy my vote went to Sympathy For The Devil.

Sympathy for the Devil got my vote. My pet favorite that is absent from the choices is “Dead Flowers.”

I voted Gimme Shelter. If Marty Scorsese is gonna use it in three of his best films (Goodfellas, Casino and The Departed) it is a strong choice.

The list did not include “Saint of Me”

One personal favourite is New Faces from “Voodoo Lounge”. That album never seems to get mentioned, but I’d say it’s the best post-Exile. I may be biased as it’s the first one that I bought new, as opposed to hearing from my parents.

i find a poll like this difficult for two reasons.

i find it hard to identify a best song with a major long lived group, especially when they were always good-to-great and changed styles/got better. the Stones, Floyd, Dead, Who all did this.

also hard is when a song choice was part of a album suite. those albums were almost always listened to in their entirety, you played it when you had time for both sides. the above groups and CSNY (and individuals from them) all had those.

My favorite is “Paint It Black” and I’m a bit surprised I’m not, for once, all alone. That song is so… different. Not only in the Rolling Stones oeuvre, but in the history of R&R. I can’t think of any other song by anyone that’s like “Paint It Black”.

Mother’s Little Helper
Play With Fire

Not only my favorite Stones tune, but my favorite R&R.
How is it different?
I just find it very good. His lover has died, “If I stare hard enough into the setting sun, my love will laugh with me before the morning comes.” Wow.
