Gimme Shelter, hands down. Although I’m pleased to see Paint it Black dead even at this point. Sympathy for the Devil? Never much cared for it.
I would go so far as to say Gimme Shelter is the best rock n roll song, period.
Arguably, Gimme Shelter is a cautionary tune, for those who believe that violence is an appropriate mechanism for social change. The song almost made my checklist. Driving chords, panicky lyrics, terrific delivery – it’s certainly a classic. That said, it seems a little bit too much of its era. Sorry – man – but civil unrest is not forever around the corner, at least not always. But then again, rock isn’t suppose to be sensible, just emotive and credible. 9/10
Big ditto on “Moonlight Mile,” though of course the ultimate answer is “Gimme Shelter” – quite possibly the most perfect rock song imaginable.
Not a huge Stones fan. There was nothing in the poll that I hate, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to play any of them.
One that you forgot and my favorite Rolling Stones song is “Almost Hear You Sigh”, which had to be from the late 80s/early 90s, around the time of Steel Wheel(chair)s
I’ve never been a Stones fan. In fact, I don’t even have one of their songs in my collection. So I voted for the ones I was at all familiar with.
