For making me rock out, it’s a tie between “Gimme Shelter” off Let It Bleed (and, yes, Merry Clayton’s vocal is the highlight there), and the live version of “Street Fighting Man” off Get Yer Ya-Ya’s Out. But the track that always makes me smile is “Factory Girl” off Beggars Banquet:
“Waitin’ for a girl and her knees are much too fat
Waitin’ for a girl, she wears scarves instead of hats
Her zipper broke down her back
Waitin’ for a factory girl.”
Because Hot Rocks was released on their old “London” label and the songs there were ABCKO (read Allen Klein) songs. “Can’t You Hear Me Knockin’” was on Sticky Fingers where most of the songs were written after the Stones absolved their managment with Allen Klein and released the record on the Rolling Stones label. I know that “Wild Horses” and “Brown Sugar” are on Hot Rocks but they were written and recorded a year or two prior to Sticky Fingers and therefore are Allen’s. To prove it (your honor) you can see Keith digging the new mix of “Brown Sugar” in the film “Gimme Shelter” which was filmed in 1969 yet the song wasn’t released until 1971. Keith Richards wrote most of “Wild Horses” as he was hesitating to leave for the 69’ tour since he had a newborn son. Mick Jagger wrote most of “Brown Sugar” in Australia when he was alone filming “Ned Kelly” in early 69’. These two songs were recorded in December 1969 in Muscle Shoals Studios in Alabama on the end of the 69’ tour.
