Best scene in Television

Yes, and the best moment is probably Felix meeting the son and blurting out, “Oh, you’re perfectly normal…”

If it were, we’d also have to mention -

Niles prepares for Valentine’s day

For MTM, I’d have to go with the “Sue Ann’s Bedroom” scene:

The best scene in MTM? It has to be when Sue Ann and Phyllis face off over Phyllis’ husband. And just when you think they can’t top each other, Mary walks in and steals the scene with a no-joke, all-business topper.

Another from The Wire: Levy cross-examines Omar in Bird’s murder trial:

I love the scene in The Sopranos where Christopher decks Lauren Bacall:

I don’t get the MTM scenes. I don’t understand the humor, with Chuckles or the bit with Sue Ann v Phyllis. I watched the Frasier scene, a show I didn’t watch, with Niles and while I didn’t laugh, I understood the comedy happening. What context am I missing in MTM?

Thanks!

I agree. I’m coming in blind as Mary Tyler Moore is not well known here, and I’ve not seen any before. I just watched the Phyllis and Su-Ann clip and have absolutely no idea how this could be considered a funny scene from a random episode let alone the pinnacle that someone wants to highlight as “the best scene on television”

This can be a problem with character-based comedy. If you don’t know the characters, you don’t get the humor.

It isn’t just you.

I watched MTM when it was new, I liked the show.

And I have NEVER thought the Chuckles scene was “all that”. I barely, uh, chuckled.

FTR, I also don’t think “Sneeds Feed and Seed (formerly Chucks)” is in any way funny,

PS, I watched the souffle skit, it was funny, but not “best scene in television” funny. I loled out loud at both Mary and the chocolate stains.

Winter comes for House Frey.

Summary

I don’t usually like death scenes, but watching Arya end Walder was cathartic.

But wait. It might be this one: Alfie and Tommy and the lists.

I have seen the Elephant Story many times and I have yet to find it funny.

Most of me favorite Breaking Bad scenes have been mentioned, but three additional ones I don’t think have been mentioned, all from ozymandias:

Walt with Holly in the gas station bathroom, chokes me up every time.

Walt rolling the barrel through the desert. The scenery, the music, the pants, just perfect.

The scene with Walt, Skyler and Finn that cumulates with Walt kidnapping Holly and Skyler screaming down the street. Just so intense.

Now for something completely unrelated, one of my favorite scenes from Freaks and Geeks is when Bill Haverchuck comes home from school, makes himself a snack and watches Shandling on TV. Such a simple scene, no dialogue, but if perfectly captures latchkey life in the 80s. It’s sad, happy and nostalgic all at once. Brilliantly done.

There is a dire lack of Justified in this thread.

In this scene here, our hero and his ex-wife arrive at her home to find the hitman he was hunting. The hitman likes to play a game with his victims: he’d place his gun on the table, have someone count down from 10, and when the victim reached for the gun he’d impale their hand with an icepick, pick up the gun, and shoot them. Then he tries to do it to Deputy U.S. Marshall Raylan Givens:

Beavis and Butt-Head were told they’d be sent to a school where they’d get their asses kicked daily if the laughed again, on the day that sex education started.

Any time Mr. Moose dropped ping pong balls on Captain Kangaroo.

I remember laughing my ass off at the MTM Chuckles scene, and had forgotten about it; so was glad to see it here.

I can think of thirty amazing scenes but cannot fathom how you could compare such different shows. I don’t know which is best.

Oh my goodness, yes! But was it really great TV, or was it specific to GenX? For me it was incredibly powerful - it filled a hole I’ve had since childhood. Finally we see Luke the badass . . . Luke the invincible . . . Luke the Jedi. I’m just not sure it will mean as much to my daughter.

That’s my favorite West Wing speech.

There are so many good West Wing speeches or scenes.

PR Knife

I agree but it’s been too long and so I don’t remember a lot. Walton is fantastic in that show.

Thanks for the conversation!
