Best Shows on Television: Your picks.

How could everyone forget the greatest show of all time…

THE WONDER YEARS!

I watch about 4 hours of TV per week. Most of those hours are spent watching various versions of Law & Order

Scrubs
The Daily Show
Conan
Simpsons
Iron Chef
Unwrapped (it’s on the food network and Marc Summers–the former host of DoubleDare–is the host)
Daria
Trading Spaces
Great Hotels

Gilmore Girls
24
The Office (BBC)
Simpsons

I really like “A Cook’s Tour” on the Food Network. Anthony Bourdain is so damn cool.

TV, In my opinion, is an absolute waste of time.
Spend hours of your life watching fictious characters for mere entertainment.
Some say it’s relaxing, yeah no shit?!? It’s because you are doing NOTHING but sitting there. You can’t help but have your brain ooze out of your ears and relax.

So If I had to pick a favorite TV show. I would have to pick the OFF channel anytime

Hot, hot and hot - Boomtown, Alias, Will and Grace

Tepid, but still watchable - ER, The West Wing

Oh, for the days of Bakersfield PD !

Top Shows:

BtVS: Though not as much as it once was. The writing is still pretty sharp, at times, but it doesn’t quite reach the levels of…

Angel: Which is one of the best written shows I’ve ever seen.

Gilmore Girls: Every once in a while, in between endless ruminating on my crush on Lauren Graham, I pause to think, “this show is really good. These characters are really well developed. This - mmmmmm… Lauren Graham…”

The Sopranos: For the acting, mostly. I’m less enthusiastic about the scripts every year.

The Simpsons: Still my highest laugh per minute ratio.

Survivor: Well cast (especially this season), well conceived, well shot, well edited, and occassionally even thought provoking… I tend to classify this as a game show, rather than “Reality TV.”

There are other shows I watch, but these are the only ones I think of as really “good” in the artistic sense.

  • FCF

P.S. Sofa - didn’t that oh-so-sophisticated disdain for television die out yet? Do you read fiction? Do you watch movies? Plays? Ballet? Opera? 'Cause you don’t get it both ways; either Shakespeare is a massive waste of time, writing as he did about fictional characters for the entertainment of an audience, or else at least some television isn’t.

The shows I will go out of my way to watch are:
West Wing
Law and Order (the original)
ER
Becker

If I can catch them, I enjoy:
Everybody Loves Raymond
Unwrapped
Whose Line Is It Anyway

I keep seeing commercials for shows that I think I’d really like, but I don’t have time right now to get caught up in any more TV shows!

The only shows I watch regularly are

  • Bargain Hunt and
  • Antiques Roadshow.

They are British shows. I know there is an American AR but it’s not shown here.

If I am home I will watch Rove [live] which is kind of like a “cool” talkshow for young people.

When The Mole (Aussie version) was on, that was my favourite show.

Angel
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Pardon the Interruption - ESPN
Baseball Tonight - ESPN
The Daily Show
David Letterman
Conan O’Brian
Boston Public
Scrubs
Booknotes - CSpan
She Spies

well, for mere entertainment, i will argue with someone who says the “Simpsons” and “Survivor” are “really “good” in the artistic sense”

I am, by no means, saying i am more sophisticated then someone who likes to watch the simpsons and laugh at Homer every night that it’s on.

I would much rather spend time doing things with my life, creating my own comedy and reality, painting, riding my bike, taking a walk outside, cooking, cleaning, paying bills, talking on the phone with friends, hanging out with buddies…These things are REAL and contribute to my well being and are part of MY LIFE.
If i sat on my lazy ass and watched TV like some people i know who STILL live with their parents or are being supported by their wives then i would have very little self respect and be depressed about life.

Same with working on computers all day and then coming home and jumping on the computer until it’s time to go to bed…

this is UNHEALTHY…it’s a proven fact, the more time you spend infront of a computer “chatting” the more depressed you will become, more socially inept…the gamers, the chat room addicts…take a look around…

AGAIN, I am voicing my opinion and I have every right to do so, just like you can spout off about the “simpsons” and how much it makes you laugh

i am not here to argue, just voicing and stating my opinion. if you don’t like it just turn the channel

Thank you Sofa. Please feel free to post in all other threads concerning topics that you disapprove of so as to give the other members of this board the benefit of your great wisdom. If there’s a thread discussing favorite junk foods, please post there about the benefits of exercise and a healthy diet. If there’s a thread about favorite April Fools Day pranks, please post there about how harmful to sensitive people’s self-esteem such pranks may be. If there’s a thread about sex (and you know there is) please post there about how pre-maritial sex is always wrong. If there’s a thread about long-lost childhood loves, please post there about how people should get over their pasts and move on. If there’s a thread discussing the fear of dentists, please post there about how one should brush and floss after each meal.

You get the idea. You are a newbie, so you may yet learn. Consider your audience and please stop being such a kill joy. It’s not that what you posted is incorrect; it is that you’re essentially preaching to the Hell’s Angels, none of whom is looking for religion in this thread right now, thank you very much. If you have something important to say, don’t hesitate to speak up. But if all you’re doing is trying to harsh people’s mellow, then please chill out. All the TV watchers here in this thread already know that there are better things to do than sit on the couch with the remote control.
