Best song on Guns N' Roses' Appetite for Destruction?

Same thing is true about Paranoid, Dio. I think they’re exercises in subconscious thinking, myself.

“It’s So Easy” is good, but because there are so many good songs on the album, a few of which are better, it kind of gets buried. It probably would have fared better on another album, like “Use Your Illusion II”.

My top four picks from “Appetite…” are:

  1. Sweet Child o’ Mine
  2. Rocket Queen
  3. Welcome to the Jungle
  4. Paradise City

I will remember Paradise City as being our theme song during one crab season; we changed the words a bit…

‘Take me down to bairdi city
where the guts are green and the gills are gritty…’
Sweet Child O’Mine/Welcome to the Jungle…hard call.

Would probably go with Welcome to the Jungle as it’s a little tighter; I adore the other, but Sweet Child does sound like it’s wandering at one point.

This really is a toughy. Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child O’Mine, Rocket Queen, Mr. Brownstone, on any given day I could change my mind and pick any of those. If there wasn’t a much better version of Your Crazy on Lies, it would probably be up there too.

For today, I pick Welcome to the Jungle.

There are a surprising number of truly great songs written that way. Great poetry, too. “Yesterday” came to Paul McCartney in a dream. He didn’t even think he wrote it. He was going around playing it for people and saying, “Have you heard this before? I heard it in my dream, and it must be someone else’s.”

“Werewolves of London” was knocked out in a bar with Zevon and his buddies just riffing around having a good time.

I think the album is a rock masterpiece. I chose Rocket Queen as my personal fav and though from the responses in the thread it seems many others agree, I’m surprised that the poll numbers don’t really reflect it.

Actually though, the truth is, though the 2nd half of the song really does reach epic levels, the first half is kinda weak. I think if you cut the 2nd half off few would remember the tune at all. But as an album ender that second half really just leaves you feeling good.

Such an awesome record. It really took the metal of the day and skullfucked it. Lotsa great songs, but I picked Sweet Child, for the guitar solo near the end.

It’s tough but I’d have to pick Paradise City. It’s the most “pop” song, but if I only listened to one song off the album over and over, that would be it. Plus it really rocks toward the end.

Seeing this thread inspires me to listen to Mr. Brownstone every time I see it. Amazing how well this song held up over almost 25 years.

Yeah, that old man, he’s a real motherfucker.

I voted for Sweet Child, but I’m happy to see all of the love here for Rocket Queen, which would get my pick for second best. I thought I was the only person who really liked that song.

I don’t care for Welcome to the Jungle at all. It was the first song of theirs I heard and I actually disliked it. I was shocked (shocked, I tell you) when I first heard Sweet Child and learned that it was the same band.

I never expected all the love for Rocket Queen. I thought I was unique, but now I realize I am just a metal-hipster.

Does anyone else agree that Rocket Queen would be much better without all of the fake moaning?

That was the hook, man! Seriously, I found it, um, amusing, but yeah, the song could have done without it.
