I think Vatican City sounds really cool. I can’ wait to go to St. Peter’s.
Lhasa - I want to see the Potala Palace. I had the chance to go when I was in Kathmandu, but I chickened out (overland in a jeep was the only option, and someone died of altitude sickness making the same journey the week before). Hopefully I’ll make it next year.
The ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru, look cool and the name sounds cool too. Perhaps one day I’ll get around to going there.
Not really a city, but the Galapagos Islands sound funky. They’re on my list.
Banff. I just like the way it sounds. Hear it’s spectacularly beautiful. My brother and his SO have golfed there several times and the photos from their trips make me anxious to get there someday.
Vancouver (in the same part of the globe) is another I’ve heard is almost too beautiful.
And if there are any places in Japan that still have the “old world” look, I’d love to see them as well. Most of Japan (in the movies and photos I’ve seen) appears to be vastly over-industrialized nowadays.
And the moors on the British Isles. In the fog. In the moonlight.
Rio de Janeiro looks too good to be true, especially from the air.
But mostly, I’d like to see the little town I grew mostly up in (left there at age 11) the way it was back then. It’s changed too much.
Seattle!
Haven’t the foggiest [no pun intended] why.
Also: Nome, Alaska.
I’ve got dozens, but a short list would probably include Petra, Istanbul, Rome, Jerusalem, Cuzco, and St. Petersburg.
Hong Kong, if I can walk into a hotel in rags and say:
“My usual suite, please.”
Cool as deep space!
Toronto
Buenos Aires!
Tierra Del Fuego
They all sound unique, and very cool.
Chicago, Boston, maybe Seattle
Casablanca. Comments on others: I would go back to Istanbul in a second and the Vatican is great if you are in Rome if for nothing else than the art.
NYC. Of course.
I once went into the Peninsula Hotel in Tivas, ripped shorts and a “Bollocks to the poll tax” T-shirt, and was treated like royalty as I sipped my Singapore Sling. Noel Coward would have turned in his grave.
Perth.
There’s a place in Illinois where they do so much effing, they call it Effingham!
Several African names have always appealed to me: Lilongwe (Malawi), Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), Nairobi (Kenya). Also Dakar, which I really do want to see - it’s supposed to be beautiful.
Now that I’ve finally been to Kalamazoo, I feel I need to achieve inner balance by seeing Timbuktu.
Montreal and Jerusalem
Only if you are into flying on old Soviet-built aircraft flown by people that don’t really seem to know what they are doing. On the plus side, they stamp your passport so you can prove you have been there. You will need to fly first to Bamako, Mali and book a flight north from there. Not much to see there anymore, I’m afraid.
Adelaide.
Supposedly has both the best restaurants & the most beautiful women in Australia.
Darwin NT.
Cuz I’ve got an on-line friend there who has turned me on to some great Australian rock & roll. I’d love to meet him in person.
Norcia, Italy
Best pork products in Italy. Norcina is the colloquial Italian term for butcher in acknowledgment of this fact. Also, reportedly, a fine base for some of the best hiking to be had in the country.
