Best Star Wars game?

I didn’t care for Rogue Squadron, the controls and chase camera bugged me. I played the hell out of X-Wing and TIE Fighter though. Me and a friend used to play as pilot and R2 unit, even though TIEs don’t have R2s. One of us would fly and shoot, the other would manage the targeting computer, weapon selection, and output levels. Then we’d switch between missions.

KOTOR was a blast too, definitely one of my favorite games ever.

Hey, me too! The game was much easier with a copilot managing shields and weapons. We used to do the same thing with Mechwarrior.

Whoa. If I didn’t know better I’d think you were the same friend.

For historical context…there was an old text-adventure game that I used to play on the Apple II as a wee bairn. I think it was just called “Star Wars”. You were luke on the Death Star, trying to kill Darth Vader and blow up the Death Star with a self-destruct switch. You would enter commands like “move east”, “climb ladder”, “swing chasm”, etc. You fought stormtroopers “fire blaster”, “swing sabre”, etc.

Anyone else remember this?

Sure, it was an Eamon game. Unfortunately, I don’t have time to dig up the link but there’s a few fan pages out there about them.

One of the amusing things about the game engine was that it was designed for fantasy, so it had things like fumbles. Yes, you, Luke Skywalker, could fumble and break your lightsaber.

Do you happen to know of anyone killed by a stray neutrino (about ‘this’ big)?

Here it is.

Yet another vote for TIE Fighter.

Until a few years ago, there were two contants in the computer game world: Star Wars games rocked, and Star Trek games sucked (Interplay’s 25th Anniversary Trek Game excepted).

Nope.

I heard of that, but I remember a standalone Applesoft BASIC Star Wars adventure. It had sound effects and was very simple. Verb/Noun parser.

Oh, I dunno, I can think of some rather poor SW games. The original Rebel Assault, for one. Same level of control over your ship as you had over Dirk the Daring in Dragon’s Lair, basically. And am I the only person in North America who bought Shadows of the Empire for the N64? NOT a good game.

This, I can totally agree with. I bought a joystick just to play Tie Fighter and don’t regret it a bit.

Rebel Assault: Not a great game. But a groundbreaking one. Made me buy a CD-ROM. Great graphics, outstanding sound and music… and it spawned the entire genre of rail shooters.

Actually, it’s a ‘great’ game, but not one that lasted.

To be fair, SotE has the best Hoth battle level ever. Everything that has come later is just trying to reach that perfection.

Not even that, for some levels. (AT-AT looping. Ugh.)

Rogue Squadron was a lot of fun, though-- for a shoot 'em up. Looked great, too. Not a patch on X-Wing Alliance, though.

I can’t wait to get set up with a computer that can handle Battlefront.

That looks pretty prime to me, from what I’ve seen.

KotOR was good, but was waaay too linear IMHO. Pissed me off when I became a jedi and realized all those blaster/melee feats I had purchased earlier were absolutely useless, though it was really fun being eeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil.
I never played TIE Fighter, Xwing vs. Tie Fighter, or Xwing Alliance (This thread is really making me wish I had though), but the original Xwing was great fun. Even playing it on an old joystick with only two buttons and no roll control I still spent hours doing strafing runs on blocky-looking, two-color frigates.
Gotta mention Jedi Knight 1/2 also. Once you got really good with a lightsabre some of the duels you’d have with other people ROCKED.

On the same note as this, Rogue Squadron 2 has the BEST battle of Endor in any Star Wars game. I must’ve played that one scenario over and over at least 50 times in one day. :stuck_out_tongue:
/Goes off making lightsabre noises

Best Star Wars game?

Wing Commander IV, natch.

I’m disappointed that they never did manage a great RTS game. Star Wars: Force Commander had potential but was ultimately disappointing compared to games of its time like Command & Conquer or Total Annihilation. I never played Age of Empires: Star Wars (Galactic Battlegrounds) but it didn’t seem to me that futuristic weapons would translate well to a game engine designed for midevil combat.

I

Occasionally I still break out my X-Wing Alliance discs and give it an install. Runs pretty good on today’s hardware. I had a couple friends who would play it online with me. We started with X-Wing vs Tie Fighter but for some reason the online net stuff wasn’t great in that, but it was ok for LAN parties. X-Wing Alliance was much more solid and we’d take turns picking bad guys and what not to fight next.

Co-op games have always appealed more to me than strictly adversarialy (at least in multiplayer).

That being said me and a few friends of mine are playing Star Wars Battlefront. It’s pretty good too, we’ve been playing Battlefield 1942, Vietnam, DC, etc for a while. It’s not quite as polished as those though, so I wouldn’t say it’s the Best Star Wars game, but it has the feel right.

I replayed the game a few times, and managed to get off Taris without leveling past level 2 or 3. Much more fun having all those Jedi powers/feats to play with.

I never managed to go Dark Side, though. I wussed out and went Light Side to start with, and after that I couldn’t bear to hurt any of the NPCs’ feelings… :smack:

What he said.
