My car is no longer living in a garage for the first time in years, and today there is nearly a -20 windchill. Getting a good pair of gloves has suddenly shot way up on my priority list.
I’m not talking arctic survival gear here, folks. I want five finger gloves that I can wear and still deal with car keys and spare change. I’m willing to lay down some serious money if necessary. I’m thinkin a hundred bucks is serious money for gloves, but what do I know? Maybe you can spend thousands on gloves… well, someone can, but I can’t.
-20 is truly cold. I regularly have to deal with 0 degrees f. -20 maybe a couple times a year.
I can, have, to start my car for about 15 minutes or so in the morning before I leave. It barely warms up in that time. I live in the sticks, so there is no worry about it being stolen.
Generly speaking, I hate gloves, and really hate to drive in them. I hope that the next car I buy will have a heated steering wheel, but I’m not holding my breath.
I’m interested in what dopers will recommend, I have seen a new work glove out that looks like it would have great dexterity, and at least a little warmth. I look for it and post if I find it.
Thinking more about it. Visit your local lumbar yard. Frammers are working year round now, and that’s where I have seen these gloves. They have to be pretty nible to finger nails, yet be tough and at least somewhat warm. I think they are neopream.
You don’t need to lay down serious money in this case. The solution to your problem need cost no more than ten bucks. Flip mitts. Mine are knit wool with a layer of Thinsulate[sup]TM[/sup] inside, and cost $8.99. They’re essentially fingerless gloves with a mitten flap that can cover your fingers, or be flipped back leaving your fingers free to manipulate keys or change. They’ve become very popular hereabouts, where -20F windchill is a very run of the mill winter day.
I find that a pair of batting gloves that I bought in the Sporting Goods at Wal*Mart work well. They are reasonably warm, leave me with a pretty good sense of feel and I don’t mind wearing black and white gloves with the manufacturer’s name prominently displayed. I use them for winter golf since the exceedingly dry air often cracks the skin on my fingers.
I really like my Isotoners. They won’t keep your fingers warm if you are out in -20 for an extended period of time, but they are fine for the short time dashing in and out of buildings, brushing the car off, getting gas…etc. I keep a heavier duty pair of mittens in the vehicles in case I break down, but the Isotoners do the trick for me.
eh, my bad. i assumed the charlie brown (newspaper) reruns are the same everywhere.
he spent about a week pondering on buying a glove (which he cannot afford) for the little red haired girl; by the time he’d sold off all his old comics to buy one, she had already got one herself.
