Wow. How this show can ever be mentioned in the same breath as the rest, baffles me. Sure, differing preferences, and there’s plenty in the list I’d not rate (too much love to the likes of Black Mirror (one good episode per season), Stranger things (yes, I do remember the 80s) and Orange is the new black (sure if it ended Season 2)), but Walking Dead?
It’s not even been five seasons since the last actual good episode. It’s a masterclass in bad writing. 11 spacefilling episodes a season? Who’s got the stupid ball this episode? EVERYONE? It’s been about ten years, you solved the zombie problem with a fake zombie suit about season 6, WHY AREN’T YOU DOING THIS? Why aren’t you in a serious prison with concrete walls, cleared out and farmed. You all deserve to die.
There could be a riot at a scifi convention if someone asked “What is the worst Walking Dead season”.
In future generations it will be the example to show quality does not equal popularity.
Is there something about the rules that excludes Wolf Hall? Otherwise, it is beyond my comprehension why this was not included/mentioned already. Surely it was shown in the US?
First season was great. Second season showed that they were spacefilling the 15 episodes from 5 episodes of script. They managed to churn out a third and fourth season which were actually good (including a classic episode), and I can’t remember anything good since.
Walking Dead was pretty good until they got to Arlington. The show would have been much better if they flipped the script and Rick and the gang went dark and went “breaking bad” Rick could have become Negan and it would have been glorious.
But no in the world of American entertainment, there are good guys and there are bad guys and they never really cross the line between the two.
To be fair that sort of bit is as per comic. The trouble is that they have to make so many more episodes than the comic, so lack the story to do anything.
They really toned down the crazy of the Governor too, he was a pussycat compared to the comic one. So they lost that sort of stuff.
Spinning things out they spent so much time wandering about trying to find each other after the Prison. Which was basically about one graphic novel if that. Ironically, the best episode of TWD was during this period.
Negan is genuinely funny in the comics, so it’s more than just the retelling.
It was shown in the U.S. but only on PBS and they didn’t extensively promote it, unlike Downton Abbey. I saw a bit of it, and thought it was good, but didn’t really follow up.
I watched a lot of TV in the past decade (and the decade before that, and the decade before that) and Bob’s Burgers has been the most consistently good long-running show this decade. Some shows roll in with their short seasons, or their short runs, and have some clunkers and episodes where nothing happens, but Bob’s Burgers is consistent over 20+ episodes each season and it never gets slow or boring. It’s always funny and fresh!
Brooklyn 99 and It’s Always Sunny are like this too, but Bob’s Burgers wins it for me.
In no particular order:
The Good Wife
Better Call Saul
The Americans
Brooklyn 99
Parks and Rec
I find threads like this interesting because, although I watch a lot of (too much?) TV, I think I have pretty low expectations for most of what I watch. I could list a whole bunch of shows that I thought were worth watching, but I’m having areally hard time saying any of them were really great.
Also, many shows start off good, and then fade. (I can’t believe at one time I thought Modern Family TERRIFIC!) Others may build later, but if I started watching them and wasn’t impressed, I never saw the better parts.
It also is interesting to see shows VERY highly lauded, which I found uninteresting (I won’t point out any of other posters’ picks.) Given the fragmentation of the media, I wonder how possible it is to get consensus as to which is the best.
Did Brooklyn 99 improve after the first season, in the first season I found it more cringe humor than clever funny like Community, The Good Place or a classic like Barney Miller.
I know Parks & Rec stayed cringe humor. But I was hoping Brooklyn 99 might be worth giving another chance.
There have been plenty of good shows, but the ones I’d put at the top of my list are The Good Place and Justified. Both of them are completely hilarious, both are serial stories, but one emphasizes the comedy and the other emphasizes the drama. Justified ended perfectly; here’s hoping The Good Place does as well.
The Walking Dead
Black Mirror
Game of Thrones
Stranger Things
Some not mentioned yet:
American Horror Story - some seasons better than others but overall a great show especially season 6 Roanoke
Modern Family - really well written comedy but glad they are wrapping it up this year.
Castle Rock - Season 1 was OK, Season 2 is really good.
If you allow December 2019 into the decade… The Mandalorian - So far, better than half the Star Wars movies already.
Well, so IMHO, it really makes me think you’ve not seen any other shows over the last ten years…
Like I said, I can how others can consider other stuff as best. Just. I really can’t see how anyone can put WTD in the best, I can see how you like it if you like stupid, repetitive nonsense. Guilty shame and all that. For me it has swung between unwatchable and bearable in recent years.
