Best "Weird Al" Yankovic Song - OFFICIAL POLL!

Seriously, only 2 votes for Genius in France?

I voted for Melanie, but only because my actual favorite Skipper Dan didn’t make it onto the poll.

Yes. Definitely.
“Genius in France” is an example of what he calls a “style parody” where he writes an original work in the style of another artist but he’s not directly parodying a particular song. The style parodies all definitely count as originals.

In fact, many (most?) of his original songs are style parodies: “Dare to be Stupid” (Devo), “Bob” (Bob Dylan), “CNR” (The White Stripes), “Stop Forwarding That Crap to Me” (Jim Steinman), the list goes on.

Yeah, that really surprises me too.
(I didn’t vote for it, it’s not my absolute #1 but I’m really surprised it’s only got 2 votes)

O.K., “One More Minute” is now tied for fifth place. We’ve got an original in the Top Five! Yay!

“Bob” is the best of all. (“WOW, BOB, WOW”)

Awwww, “Bob” got two nominations. Johanna, if only you had found your way to the Nominations Thread in time your vote would have given it the necessary three nominations to get it into the official poll. Bummer.
(I really like that song too!)

I’ve always thought that Weird Al could capture the essence of a particular subculture or mentality in a song. For me, the best song where he does that is “It’s All About the Pentiums,” with a trash-talking computer geek perspective: “My flat screen monitor is 40-inches wide, I believe yours says ‘Etch-a-Sketch’ on the side,” and my favorite lines: “I should cap you like Old Yeller, you’re just about as useless as JPEGS to Helen Keller.”

Followed closely behind is “Trapped in the Drive Thru” which perfectly encapsulates life living in a relationship. Then comes “Hardware Store,” “Albuquerque” and “Frank’s 2,000 inch TV.” I think all of these perfectly sum up certain mentalities.

I voted for it. It’s far and away my favorite, on so many levels.

“Dare to Be Stupid” is a lot of fun, but my immediate thought was “One More Minute.”

I voted for “White and Nerdy,” but only because my favorite (“Couch Potato”) wasn’t on the list.

As it should be, I say. It’s hard for me, at least, to rate the straight song parodies as songs in their own right.

The first time Good Enough For Now played in Shuffle mode on my iPod, I didn’t recognize it as Weird Al, or satire, and was thinking what an refreshingly honest country song it was.

Doggone, I hadn’t noticed that one, just this one.
