Bethesda release TES 1 and 2 for free!

This makes two developers/publishers giving out or offering classic titles for the PC (Lucas Arts being the first one). Are there any other with such plans?

I was thinking about going back to Oblivion (for the umpteenth time) Once I finally beat Fallout 3, now I might just go back to these two games first. Sweet.

Westwood released some of the earlier Command and Conquer games for free, as part of the run-up to the release of Red Alert 3.

I take it you don’t remember just how buggy Daggerfall was?

Come on. Every game should implement a “Teleport me to the goal of the dungeon because it’s outside of the level geometry” button.

Daggerfall would have been such a great game except for the bugs. Has anybody made a game anywhere near that scale since? I mean yeah it was all procedurally generated, and repetitive, but it took like a real life week to run across the entire map without fast travel. The magic system was great and flexible too, if a bit exploitable

Wasn’t Arena already free? Or am I mistaken?

Veeeeeaaaaaannnnnnggggggaaannnnnnnncccccceeeee!!!

Those randomly generated dungeons were absolute hell to navigate. Fortunately you could just force your way through a ceiling, levitate yourself in the void beyond to the place you needed to get, and pop back through the walls.

Though once you had been through 30 or so you would know all of the 2 dozen or so dungeon module blocks by heart. Where the door to the next block would be, or the 3 possible locations where seeked item would be.

This. I wouldn’t touch Daggerfall again if it had tits and paid me to play. That sucker would only corrupt my bank account, I’m sure of it.

Yes, Arena has been available for free download from Bethesda for a couple years; Daggerfall is new though, and I’m pretty happy about that. Buggy or not, lots of nostalgia for that game (I lost my disks years ago in one move or another).

ETA: Maybe I got lucky, but it really wasn’t as buggy for me as comments like Kobal2’s suggest. Although my SO said it bugged out around the middle of the mainquest, I never had any real trouble with it.

LOL! I had blocked it out. It all came flooding back when you guys started mentioning particulars. :stuck_out_tongue:

Like how on release all the skeletons walked backward?

MechWarrior IV is also on the free-express, I believe.

Oh, my, was that game a mess. Ultima IX is one of the only games I’ve played that can equal it in bugginess.

At least Daggerfall was good when it worked.

I actually played Daggerfall free, as well. I have absolutely no idea how that happened, but I didn’t bootleg it and I downloaded it. It was probably 6-7 years ago or so, but it might have been a temporary thing to promote Morrowind or something, which came out about 7 years ago.

Doesn’t it?

It does. But 640*480 tits really don’t cut it for me.

Kids these days, with their hi-def 3D 1080p tits. Probably never even seen an ASCII tit.

Oh, just don’t, grandpa. I grew up in ( . ) time. It was shite, and we both know it. I actually wanked to .JPEGs ! How pathetic is that ?! Hurray for streaming High Def, I say. Still pathetic, but jiggling pathetic.
