I’ve read that Jackie DeShannon was very unhappy that her record company made her sing her song in a light-hearted fashion, and was glad that Kim Carnes released a version more in keeping the lyrics. So much so that DeShannon now sings the song closer to the Carnes version than the original recording. I also remember Casey Kasem on AT40 saying Bette Davis thanked Carnes for making her relevant in the eyes of her grandchildren.
