When Gus has Walt over for dinner, Gus mentions (the, not my) kids. He implied he was a family man without outright stating it.
We also see a toy car on the floor in the dining room when Walt first enters Gus’ house, as well as what looks like a toddler-sized table and chair set with blocks or maybe a Finding Nemo stuffed animal on it.
Did we need a whole episode dedicated to getting rid of the cab driver? And I know BB/BCS crew is known for long and repeated shots, but this felt like they couldn’t think of anything else to do rather than making a point.
IMO, one of the weakest episodes in all of Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad.
That has to be the most random and subtle reference to “2001: A Space Odyssey” I’ve ever seen.
Damn it, I was hoping I was the only one that noticed that!
As it is, I thought this episode was great. I get the feeling that Gene will be the one who winds up getting greedy.
I also loved the guest appearances; we already knew Carol Burnett would be appearing at some point, but it was cool to see Jim O’Heir (Jerry from Parks and Recreation) too.
What was the 2001 reference?
The invoice number of the crate was 1968AE35. 2001 came out in 1968, and AE35 was the part that HAL 9000 claimed needed to be replaced - " I’ve just picked up a fault in the AE-35 unit. It is going to go 100 percent failure within 72 hours."
Yeah that’s about as subtle as it gets.
Man, that black and white cinematography was… *chef’s kiss* I’m going to miss these master classes in How To Make Shit Look Good On Camera. And that shirt gave me a migraine without even knowing exactly HOW garish it could possibly be.
This is beyond plot, this is pure character and I am here for it.
Putting an end to the cab driver plot was the last loose end other than what happens to Kim. We may be back to color next week
Well if this episode did anything, it made me hungry for Cinnabon.
Why does “Gene” look younger than Saul/Jimmy.
Huh, I thought Gene looked elderly in a fair number of shots. There was one in particular from a low angle where his neck wrinkles stood out and I thought he looked like a grandpa.
Maybe its a before and after Odenkirk heart attack shot?
So for anyone else like me who couldn’t figure out who “Jeffie” was - they apparently recast the role of the cab driver with a different actor.
And 3 minutes to eat a Cinnabon? Damn.
Nice callback to BB with the whole “we’re done” speech.
Oh and damn you writers, you got my hopes up with the high heels shot, but I should’ve known better.
That was confusing the hell out of me, I thought I’d forgotten another character besides the one in the mall that made Gene say the BCS catchphrase!
The music piece from when Jimmy/Saul/Gene was schmoozing security was familiar. It was “Jim on the Move” from Mission: Impossible.
I think the problem is that expectations were so high. They had resolved the major plot lines that needed to be resolved with 4 episodes remaining, leaving a really interesting open situation where they might explore a number of different directions. And they gave us this throwaway nothing. It wasn’t terrible, it just felt like a wasted opportunity.
I actually thought it was really clever. The scheme was a typical Slipping Jimmy scam, and you can tell he has missed the buzz of those so badly, but it also served another purpose, to neutralise the threat from the taxi driver. So, a dual-layered scam, if you like.
