I was wondering how Marian was going to go from cat videos to Saul Goodman. Gene slipped there telling her things were different in Albuquerque. He was just too giddy thinking he was pulling another fast one on an old lady. Jimmy and Saul would have been more careful than that.
I guess Kim’s self-punishment is to keep living that bland, joyless prison of a life with yep, yep guy. It’s sad but I don’t feel sorry for her. Things could have turned out much worse.
So next week, death or prison for Gene? I’m ok with either. The evil in his eyes as he contemplated killing the cancer guy and Marian showed that there’s not a shred of decency left in him.
Now that was a great episode. A little cameo with Jesse, all that was needed. A strong emphasis on the story of Kim and Jimmy in the present. Good god, I was scared he was going to kill Carol Burnett! He’s effed anyway, and at least Kim can live with herself for doing right by Howard’s widow, regardless of the consequences. There’s some good follow up discussion on Talking Saul with Chris Hardwick which aired right after Waterworks.
Emilio is the same character who is arrested & then killed in the first episode of Breaking Bad, so this scene definitely predates anything in BB.
Speaking of bland - the puzzle she was doing was completely blank. And she refuses to make a single decision - they spent 2 minutes discussing whether or not to use Miracle Whip in place of mayo, and wouldn’t pick vanilla or strawberry ice cream for Tammy’s birthday.
But interestingly, she’s still the driven, stickler for details she’s always been - she spends the day poring over catalogs, talking on the phone to manufacturers, and even heading to the factory floor before finishing the web page of 90-degree elbows.
Well, maybe a shred. He could have killed Marion but let her use the pendant instead.
Is Kim Wexler’s self-imposed penance for her sins… would she extend this to punishing herself sexually, so that when she engaged in that most basic of desires, she is still beating herself up about all this?
What did Kim say to Jesse just before walking off into the rain? I ran it back about 3 times and just could not make it out. So, kudos to the sound guy for adding that little extra layer…
It’s interesting - in Jeffie’s first appearance, when he gets Gene to admit he’s Saul, Jeffie comes across as smart and menacing. But this season, with the recast Jeff, he’s just a useless putz who slips and knocks himself out during the robbery, then later can’t drive 200 yards away from the police.
So sadly, if you enter “Albuquerque con man” into ask.com, the successor to ask Jeeves, it doesn’t give you anything useful. But as soon as you start to enter “albuquerque” into google, it immediately suggests “Albuquerque con man”, and the first page of results all refer to BCS.
I thought maybe it was, but also thought maybe that was just the camera angle/lighting/black-and-white.
If it was a blank puzzle, then blank puzzle + miracle whip + vanilla is definitely a running motif of bland suburban emptiness.
I loved this episode. Frankly, I’ve loved this whole season. Assuming next week doesn’t somehow utterly undercut everything, I’m willing to declare BB + El Camino + BCS as the greatest work of art in the history of television. Its longevity, consistency and quality is just unreal.
I thought Jimmy was very stupid not putting the watches etc back once he saw Jeff crash the taxi. He could’ve just left them somewhere downstairs rather than risk going upstairs again, for all he knew, the vic would assume he’d smashed the glass himself in his drunken stupor and then got his watches out for some reason.
He’s gotten too cocky. Even when he gets back to his apartment, he’s not rushing to put together a go-bag or anything. He’s just putting his feet up waiting for Jeffy to call.
He’s always been self destructive and he’s doing everything he can to sabotage himself.
One thing though–the phone call with Kim, Jimmy says “it’s been six years” and he’s still out there so is this a different phone call than we saw last week? Because we know when that one happened and it’s not six years down the road from BB.
In the Gene timeline, Breaking Bad just ended. Which means it just started two and a half years ago, in 2008. Kim and Saul split and divorced in 2004, so they’re implying they haven’t spoken since then. So Saul was on his own, being Saul without Kim, for almost four years before Walt walked into his office.
I’m wondering how much Kim knew about his life and crimes, both before and after Walt imploded, and Saul’s role in Walt’s empire entered the 24 hour news cycle.
I watched it a few times, it was definitely blank. And I don’t think she was doing it upside down either - there was enough glare off the puzzle that it wasn’t just plain cardboard - it was one of these.
